8 Pesos Jeepney Fare to take effect on February 2, 2011

After the taxi fare increase during the start of the year, another burden to regular PUV (public utility vehicles) commuters is about to take effect this month of February.

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) approved the P8 jeepney fare in Manila which is P1 more than the current rate of P7. The provincial P1 jeepney fare increase was also approved by the Board. The said fare hikes will take effect on Wednesday, February 2, 2011.

Via Inquirer, Manuel Iway, an LTFRB board member, released the following statements:

“The provisional increase was granted because the board took judicial notice that the prices of goods have been going up, as well as the cost of maintaining jeepney operations, affecting the livelihood of operators.”
, Iway said.

While the interest of the public is still the main concern, we must also protect the rights of the jeepney operators, who are serving vital industries,” Iway added.

Pasang Masda and the Federation of Jeepney Operators and Drivers Association of the Philippines were the people behind the request of the newly approved jeepney fare hike.

Oyo Boy, Kristine Wedding Video

If you happen to have read on my post about the prenuptial video of Oyo Boy Sotto and Kristine Hermosa, you might have noticed that the video was set to private. This was according to the request of the couple. But after some days, finally they allowed their fans to view their pre-wedding video.

Not only that. The official wedding video of Oyo and Kristine was also made public. Check out Oyo and Kristine's wedding video below:

According to their videographers, Oyo Boy especially requested to use Howie Day's Collide as background music for the video. A bad news to their fans, the couple also made a request on a vows-free video which according to witnesses were sweet and funny.

"Oyo made one request the day before the wedding, that we use Howie Day’s Collide on their SDE. The exact same song used in Tin’s march.

Tin, on the other hand, wanted the SDE soundbites and vows-free. A bummer for those who weren’t there, the two did exchange some sweet and funny words that day. But like I said, they got exactly what they wanted." says Threelogy Video Corporation, the official wedding videographer of Oyo and Kristine.

Once again, you can check the prenuptial video HERE.

Skins Reminds Us. . . Teach Kids Discernment. . .

There's been lots of talk and buzz concerning MTV's controversial teen drama, Skins. In perfect world we wouldn't be talking about Skins because it wouldn't exist. In a near-perfect world we would be able to step into our kids' lives and simply tell them to turn it off, or don't turn it on in the first place. . . and they would gladly listen knowing that we had their best interests in mind. But the fact of the matter is that we don't live a perfect world. So what do we do?

That last question is my cue (given by me) to trumpet our need to teach our kids to think critically and Christianly for themselves about their media choices. . . a skill that will serve them well both now and for the rest of their lives.

For years we worked hard here at CPYU to develop a paradigm, system, and tool for media discernment. I believe that we landed on something really excellent and helpful when we put together our How To Use Your Head to Guard Your Heart: A 3(D) Guide to Making Responsible Media Choices, our little guide that's now being used by tens of thousands of kids. If you're not familiar with it, you can learn more here. Then last year, our friends at Simply Youth Ministry worked with us to created and release Download, a simple-to-use three-week DVD curriculum that teaches kids how to use the 3(D) guide.

We're committed to using the 3(D) process here at CPYU - Discover, Discern, Decide - and we endeavor to filter music videos, films, and shows through the process on a regular basis. Last week I put together a 3(D)review of the premiere episode of Skins. It's posted on our website and is available as a free download.

I would encourage you to download and take a look at our 3(D) review of Skins. Then, I encourage you to consider doing any or all of the following:

1. Print out the 3(D) review of Skins and get it into the hands of the youth workers, parents, teachers, and pastors you know.

2. If you've got kids who have been watching Skins, get the 3(D) review into their hands and spend some time talking about it.

3. Teach your kids how to do the 3(D) process. We've put the tools together for you to use and we've made them very, very inexpensive and affordable. You can order copies of How to Use Your Head to Guard Your Heart: A 3(D) Guide to Making Responsible Media Choices here, and you can order your own copy of Download here as well.

A Musical Tribute to John Barry OBE (1933-2011)

It was with great sadness that I heard today of the death from a heart attack, of composer John Barry at the age of 77.

For me, 'Mr James Bond' is right up there with the 20th century's best when it comes to musical compositions.

He won 5 Oscars and a BAFTA Fellowship and was awarded the OBE in 1999.

Here are just a few of his finest compositions...

RIP John Barry

Who Wants To Buy Part Of A Minor League Baseball Team?

Yeah, that's right. I don't know if any of you heard, part of the delightful fallout from that whole "Madoff thing" is that there's a baseball club that's looking for some minority investors. Some of you may never have actually heard of this "baseball team" because their performance over the past few years has called into question whether or not they are a "real" baseball team, but sure enough they've been playing 162 games a year -- no more than 162, let's be clear -- right here in the Big Apple.

Come on. You've heard of them.

Yes, that's right people. Mets chairman Fred Wilpon and his son Jeff announced this week both with a released statement, a press conference, and a personal e-mail to their fans which made me feel oh so special, that they have decided to explore finding new investors interested in a minority stake in the New York Mets. A real live baseball team!

Now, if you've been following the 'Ropolitans like I have for more than a decade, this announcement seems like a particularly odd one for the Wilpons to make for a few reasons. For one, they've done an extremely large amount of work over recent years to consolidate and improve the financial potency of the franchise. The introduction of SNY in 2006 has gone quite a distance to bring more money into the team's coffers and give them a financial base, ideally, more in line with those crosstown rivals in the Bronx. In addition to that, the recent construction of the Wilpon moneyfactory, also known as Citi Field, was further intended to strengthen the team's position. Lastly, and perhaps most notably, Fred Wilpon has tried awfully hard to make sure this team would belong to him and only him.

Obviously, given the track record of one Fred Wilpon, it seems patently bizarre that he would want to unload a chunk of his baby just as he's finally prepared the setup to make the team flourish financially even if it doesn't do the same on the field. So what gives?

Oh right. That.

It seems someone has decided that considering lots of people have lost money due to the pyramid scheme of Bernie Madoff, and because the Wilpons, who had hundreds of millions of dollars tied up in those investments, um, didn't, they must be the perfect people to sue to get that money back. What with Bernie being in jail and all -- without his Mets jacket -- it makes sense. I won't claim to understand how all the legal liabilities work in this thing since I'm, you know, not a lawyer, and I'm sure there's a legitimate reason why the Wilpons might possibly be somehow liable in this whole horror story, but it all seems kind of silly to me. Regardless however, absolutely none of that matters. The only thing of note is this:

There's a part of the Mets for sale!

Why is this so exciting? Well, some people might claim it is, in fact, not exciting at all, and while Rob Parker may have a point here, he's also an unnecessary provocateur and an asshole, so I'm going to ignore him for the moment. No, for me this is more exciting because I've just realized this is as good a prospect as any to pull some money together and own a baseball team. Indeed, that prospect was the very first idea I had when I first saw the story.

Shockingly none of my other potential investors seem interested in joining in despite my assurances that the Mets could not possibly be worth more than $10,000 or so given their on-field performance the last few years, but the bigger obstacle than this might be competition. And apparently that competition is coming. My guess is these other potential owners are going to jack the price out of my personal range, but let me state this right here for all who are interested.

I AM WILLING TO LISTEN TO ANYONE WHO IS INTERESTED IN FORMING A BID TO BUY A MINORITY STAKE IN THE NEW YORK METS.

Is that clear? I want to buy the Mets, I want to pool money to get the job done and I will actively seek partners. Not only will owning a piece of a Major League Baseball team be a great source of pride, but we'll get to see any Mets game we want for free (probably) and it'll totally help us get chicks. Or men if that's your fancy. Plus, I'm totally a really serious big time Mets fan. Just look at that picture of what I wore to my brother's wedding this summer to the right. I'm totally right for it. If I somehow won't be the right person for the job, the list of potential minority owners is certainly interesting.

My personal preference is for the minority bid to go to a group that is headed by Martin Luther King III, which also involves former Met Ed Kranepool and the son of Mets great Donn Clendenon. Failing that, however, the likely bid being brought forward by Martin Silver, the owner of Georgi Vodka, will at least make those long painful days at the park go faster.

In fact, the more I think about it, the more appropriate it seems to align the classy Mets organization with the class of a brand of vodka that is sold in plastic bottles.

If I'm unable to get my hands on any piece of the Mets, I will simply have to settle for watching the Wilpons' iron grip on the franchise slowly recede, which, given the team's prospects since they gained full control of the franchise, probably isn't the worst thing as I've noted before. Now to be fair, I suspect that regardless of ownership, the administration of Sandy Alderson will bring a much more professional auspice to the franchise and that success will follow, much as it did with Frank Cashen in the early 1980s, but giving the Wilpons less power couldn't hurt. And in the end, the prospect of the team forcibly getting better ownership is really enough for me.

Considering that this weekend already saw Southampton blow a second-half lead in the FA Cup against Manchester United and that Northwestern blew a tantalizingly close chance at knocking off No. 1 Ohio State, well, the promise that the Mets are on the way to better times would help salve those wounds. The fact that I also booked a flight to beautiful Detroit for a Pistons and Red Wings game this April also perks me up a little bit (more on that in a few weeks), but when I realize that the Pro Bowl is tonight, well, that just makes matters worse.

This is why, for the good of the Mets, and maybe my sanity, this chunk of the Mets being for sale is coming just at the right time. If it can't be me, maybe it can be someone else who actually knows how to run a baseball team.

But remember, I'm not giving up on my bid for a piece of the pie. Someone out there will want to take a bite, too. Who's with me?

A Happy Sunday

I got so much to be thankful for, today. Firstly, I was able to wake up early to exercise a bit. I usually wake up late on Sundays. Good thing my phone's alarm clock worked this time. Most of the time it doesn't since it does not wake me up. (Yeah, I am blaming the phone... Haha)

Secondly, I arrived at the Church just minutes before it started. Glad I was not late and was able to take a comfortable seat beside a gorgeous being... (Nagkataon lang po... I don't usually attend the mass to flirt... But I also do sometimes, though... Toinks... Nyahaha)

Lastly, I am grateful that I decided to pay my internet bills today since the cute cashier was on duty. (Oh damn! How lovely are those eyes! Wahehe)

Photos of Shirtless Justin Bieber hit the Web!

Supposedly to be sent to his girlfriend Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber's photos while posing shirtless have been circulating the web, recently.

Laramag reports that while doing a shoot, Justin Bieber asked his stylist to take some pictures of him using a Blackberry phone while half-naked to be later sent to his girlfriend, Selena Gomez. But obviously, the shirtless Justin Bieber pictures ended up in the internet.

Justin was talking to the stylist, asking her to take sexy pictures of him for his girlfriend. He was just being cute about it, joking around, but he definitely wanted to look good for this girl. He never said the name Selena, but we knew who it was.”

More shirtless Justin Bieber photos below:

Old at Heart (Part Deux) - The Rock'n Roll Golden Years of Music

Following on from my 'Golden Years of Music' blog post in which I reminisced of the songs from the 50s and 60s which I can recall from my childhood having been born the son to a 'Teddy Boy', a number of readers commented that what I left from my selection was a homage to the rock'n roll giants of the age.

As a fan of this genre then, I felt it only right to blog on some of the rock'n roll giants of this time.

Where do I start? Well, it has to be Chuck Berry hasn't it. From 1964, as made famous for a new generation by the 1990's film Pulp Fiction, 'You Never Can Tell'.

I've already blooged about my love for Fats Domino, so here he is, in 1957 with 'Blue Monday'.

Gene Vincent 'Be-Bop-A-Lula'd in 1956.

Forever in the shadows of the likes of Cash, Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis, was the highly under-rated Carl Perkins. A personal favourite of mine, from 1956, was his 'Honey Don't'.

But speaking of him just now, Johnny Cash is a great - certainly in my book. I could happily dedicate a whole blog post to him alone. But to pick one? Easy. Live from San Quentin, it's the 'Folsom Prison Blues'.

What can be said about Buddy Holly that hasn't already been said? Here he is in 1959 and it's 'Raining in my Heart'.

Of course I must give a nod to 'The King'. I'm a big Elvis fan but as he gets more than enough exposure compared to many of his contemporaries, for once I thought I'd 'bury' him in the middle of this compilation to showcase the others more. But here he is, in 1957 with the anthemic 'Jailhouse Rock'.

Eddie Cochran was another master. Here he is with his 1958 hit 'Come on Everybody'.

Don't forget the Spencer Davis Group. Here they are with another song made famous for younger generations like myself via film, in this case 'The Blues Brothers'. From 1967 it's 'Gimme Some Lovin'.

Now I'm a huge Roy Orbison fan. The 'Big O', like Elvis and Buddy Holly died far too young but like them, he left a musical heritage for us all. Here he is with a song from his 'Mystery Girl' album in 1988. He'd made a comeback and this performance was at Antwerp on November 19th of that year. He died of a heart attack weeks later on December 6th.

'You've Got It'.

But let's finish at the beginning. 1956 saw the first 'great' Rock'n Roll song thanks to Bill Hayley and the Comets. 'Rock Around The Clock'.

To conclude, to truly finish where I began and a second helping of Chuck Berry. Possibly the greatest rock'n roll song of all time from 1958. Was there ever a more famous boy than Johnny B. Goode?

All of the above ladies and gentlemen, is what I like to refer to as 'proper music'.

Shaina Magdayao calls Ruffa Gutierrez at 2AM!

It seems like beauty queen Ruffa Gutierrez is still not out of the picture of John Lloyd Cruz - Shaina Magdayao love affair. A new intriguing issue is buzzing around the web and papers that John Lloyd's ex-girlfriend Ruffa received a call from Shaina in the middle of the night at exactly 2 in the morning!

The above photo is from an old issue but may be related to this one. Credits to the owner of the pic. :D

And take note, according to reports, Shaina was said to be crying while talking to Ruffa on the phone!

Tweetbiz host Tim Yap confirmed the incident saying that he received a response via text message from Ruffa after he asked her about the issue.

"Realllyyy? Who said?? Yes she called but I were half asleep next to my girls (hellow it was 2 am!) so I couldn't talk. Simply told her that if she had a problem...to go ask JL not me. That's all I'm gonna say Timmie. Pasensya na. Kaloka!" the SMS message reads.

Star Magic who is handling Shaina also released a short statement confirming Ruffa and Shaina talking on the phone:

"Yes, it's true. The ladies had a private and cordial talk." according to Star Magic.

Ruffa did not reveal what was Shaina's reason of calling so late. She only said:

"For those waiting for my pasabog or tell-all...I'm soooo sorry to disappoint you but it's not gonna happen. You can wonder & guess all you want, give your blatant opinions, sweet or violent reactions but at the end of the day tweeties it's our lives, our happiness & frankly none of anyone business." Ruffa posted on Twitter.

What could Shaina's reason for calling in the middle of the night possibly be? Are John Lloyd and Shaina having problems in their relationship? Feel free to comment below.. :D

Mark Williams MP Calls for Direct Aberystwyth-London Train Service

Ceredigion's Welsh Lib Dem MP Mark Williams has re-iterated his call today for a direct train service between Aberystwyth and London.

It comes on the day that the Wrexham and Shropshire rail service to London closed. The service was reinstated in 2008 after a gap of 41 years, but has been scrapped by Wrexham, Shropshire and Marylebone Railway (WSMR) after a fall in customer numbers.

A direct Aberystwyth to London service was turned down last year by the Office of Rail Regulation because of the effect it would have on existing routes.

Mark Williams MP said:

“The Wrexham and Shropshire train provided an excellent service, and many of my constituents have benefited from the provision of a direct service to London from Shrewsbury.

“This highlights the need for a direct service to London from Mid Wales, which would be a huge boost to the area, and I hope Arriva Trains Wales will consider submitting a revised bid for a direct Aberystwyth to London service.

“For too long Mid Wales has been left isolated by the lack of rail services, and the demise of the Wrexham and Shropshire service is another blow.”

Mark is right and Arriva need to submit a revised bid for a direct service to properly re-connect Mid-Wales with London now that this route that passes through Shrewsbury has as of today, ceased to operate.

The last direct train from Aberystwyth to London was in 1991. It's been 20 long years and as students and tourists alike will testify, it's been sorely missed. It would be great for our local economy at this time to benefit from this service and as Arriva Trains want it also, the Office of Rail Regulation now need to re-consider and give us here in mid-Wales this extra, much needed life-line.

Eastwest Bank gives P2000 worth of Nike Park apparel to every new Credit Card Registrant

Is Andy Murray the Man to end 75 Years of British Tennis Hurt?

Baddiel & Skinner famously sang of England's '30 Years of Hurt' in their footballing 'Three Lions' epic of 1996. As it happens, that particular English heartache now extends to 45 years and counting.

But that's nothing. Because British tennis fans have got a lot more hurt to mull over. To be precise, we've been waiting 75 years since the last British man won a Tennis Grand Slam - Fred Perry winning his 8th and final Grand Slam at the US Open in 1936. He was the first player to win each of the 4 Grand Slam titles but no British man has even managed to win one of them since.
Fred Perry

Andy Murray is now one match away from breaking that voodoo. His excellent, well fought win over David Ferrer today means that he is a Novak Djokovic victory away from creating history.

He's not the first British man to reach a Grand Slam final since 1936 but he is the first to have done so on more than one occasion.

John Lloyd lost in the Australian Open final in 1977 whilst Greg Rusedski lost in the US Open final in 1997. Andy Murray meanwhile lost in the 2008 US Open and 2010 Australian Open finals.

Britain has had more success in the women's arena but even that is now fleeting. The last female singles winner was Virginia Wade in 1977 at Wimbledon (having also won the US and Australian Opens in 1968 and 1972), a year after Sue Barker won the French Open in 1976.

But to wait 75 years for a male winner is quite staggering. Is Murray the man to do what the likes of Lloyd, Rusedski and Tim Henman failed to accomplish? It's about time that a British player stepped out from Perry's shadow.

In Novak Djokovic, he has a stern opponent. Yes, he isn't Nadal and he isn't the Federer who has defeated Murray in his previous 2 Grand Slam finals, but Djokovic is a real test. In 7 head-to-head matches, Djokovic leads by the slender margin of 4-3 but he does have the experience of having won a Grand Slam title in 2008 - in Australia of all places. Djokovic also defeated Federer of course in the semi-final so he's on top form.

So Murray has a tough tough test but then this is a Grand Slam final - there's no easy matches at this level!

Can he do it? Of course he can. But he needs his form to turn up at the arena on Sunday in a way in which it didn't when he played in his previous two finals.

It's been 75 long years. Britain deserves a win now surely! Andy Murray certainly does.

So...COME ON TIM! Uh....I mean COME ON ANDY!

Palawan, Philippines makes it to National Geographic's "20 Best Trips of 2011" list

The National Geographic Traveler editors recently released their list of 20 best destinations to consider in 2011. The beautiful island of Palawan, Philippines made it to the list!

Qouting NatGeo:

"Palawan’s limestone karst cliffs, coral atolls, mangrove forests, sugar-white sandy beaches, and extensive fringing reefs create one of the Philippines' most biodiverse terrestrial and marine environments. Designated as a fish and wildlife sanctuary in 1967, the Philippines' largest (in total land area) province encompasses nearly 1,240 miles (1,995 kilometers) of coastline stretching across 1,768 islands."

Yeah, I heard so much about Palawan. For sure, I'll be packing for a trip to El Nido one of these days if I can have time and money.. It's been my long time dream to visit this marvelous place... :D

By the way, you can check NatGeo's article on Palawan HERE.

Jasmine Curtis, Chalk Magazine February 2011 Issue Covergirl

The lovely younger sister of actress and host Anne Curtis, Jasmine Curtis who recently signed a contract with the Kapatid Network, TV5, is the cover of the February 2011 issue of Chalk Magazine.

The showbiz newcomer looks very sweet in the cover. Jasmine Curtis is indeed as gorgeous as her sister. Will she be a brighter star than Anne? A long way to go, but one thing is for certain she got the face! Agree??? :D

GOTW

As I was sitting here going through all of my comics (yeah, it is a boat load of fun), I started thumbing through 100 Bullets, which is a fantastic read, and I remembered how hot Megan Dietrich was, and how much of a major bitch she could be.  She was a bit of slut, liked to play Benito and his father of each other (and I think she slept with both of them).  But, she is one of the most powerful people in the world and that makes her even hotter.  Sadly, I could not find any good pictures of her, so you will just have to buy the comics and read them yourself.

Sarah Geronimo, Gerald Anderson's new movie "Just The Way You Are" in the works!

Update: The new title of the movie is "Catch Me I'm In Love".

An interesting team up of the Pop/Box-Office Princess Sarah Geronimo and Action Drama Prince Gerald Anderson is currently being cooked. Yes, the two Kapamilya stars are working on their first movie together entitled, "Just The Way You Are".

The taping of the new movie started without a title and now it has been revealed and confirmed by a blog that "Just The Way You Are" will be its title.

Hmmmmm... What do you think about it, guys? How does the title appeal to you?

And since we witnessed on the axed TV show "Idol" that Sarah-Sam and Sarah-Coco weren't successful pair ups, do you think Sarah-Gerald loveteam would work this time around?

I also wonder if Bruno Mars who is coming to Philippines for a concert will be recording his song with the same title for the movie... :D

Check out the details of Bruno Mars' Concert in Manila and Cebu this April HERE.

See, I Was Mostly Kidding About That SI Cover Jinx Thing

But maybe I should have thought about it a bit more closely. See, I don't really believe in curses. I think they're silly. Unless you happen to referring to the Chicago Cubs. But given that Sports Illustrated's cover jinx strikes as frequently as it does, a statistically significant percentage of the time, perhaps I should be thinking differently. I had often assumed there were inherent biases in the original study, such as the fact that teams featured on the cover are often more likely than not to be playing a major elimination game immediately afterward which they only hold a 50/50 shot at winning anyway. And when all else fails, I would always rely on the fact that after knocking off Green Bay in a thrilling 2007 NFC Championship Game at bitter Lambeau Field, Eli Manning was thrust onto the cover inviting certain doom.

But we all know what happened then.

So of course, the Giants' Super Bowl XLII victory was irrefutable proof that the cover jinx was just a silly joke to bring up from time to time and not something to fear perpetually. But this year may have changed my tune. After seeing both the Jets and Bears turn in performances that left them shy of reaching the big game, I started to wonder if this year's covers, and last year's covers, might be indicative of a trend. And sure enough, if you really want to search back through the seasons there are even more examples of the eventual Championship Sunday losers getting tossed on their hides one game short of the Super Bowl.

After years of only bringing up the SI Cover Curse for purposes of mock humor, perhaps it's finally time to start taking it seriously, or at least to campaign for the Giants, Mets, Devils, Knicks or Northwestern to never ever appear on the cover again unless it is immediately following a championship victory. Fortunately, I know I'll never have to worry about that happening with Southampton FC (who happens to be facing off with Manchester United in the FA Cup this weekend) or the Geelong Cats. Probably not the Devils or Northwestern either, who have all of three cover appearances between them.

That said, with the cover now laying both individuals, teams and even whole leagues in its wake, it could finally be time to give it real credence.

Unless, of course, you're rational.

I never claimed to be that, but there are probably several decent reasons as to why the Bears and Jets lost this past weekend beyond some slips of paper. After all, the Bears were never quite as good as their record this season while the Packers, who finished a respectable 10-6, were generally thought to be not nearly as bad as theirs. It didn't take a football savant to realize that Green Bay was playing better than, well, anyone in the League heading into the NFC Championship Game, and the fact that this season the Pack were simply better than the Bears is likely what accounted for their victory Sunday.

One could just as easily have made the same arguments for the Steelers topping the Jets right afterward, but that game is a horse of a different color. For one, the teams were far more evenly matched. For another, the Jets, who cordially spotted Pittsburgh a 24-0 lead in the first half, very nearly capped a comeback for the ages and only failed to do so by shooting themselves in the foot. That is not to say the Steelers didn't play well enough to win the game -- clearly they did -- but New York, which displayed frightful ineptitude for the first 29 minutes or so played an absolutely dominant second half on both sides of the ball.

However, this game wound up resting on a very delicate precipice in the middle of the fourth quarter which saw New York make two very crucial errors. The Jets were at the tail end of what had the makings of being an absolutely legendary postseason drive. After pulling it to within 24-10, New York embarked on a massive 80-yard, 17-play drive that brought them down to the Pittsburgh goal line with four chances to punch it in and make it a one-score game with plenty of time remaining. I am of the opinion that had New York scored here and had seven minutes to work with against a Pittsburgh offense that had shown no ability to move the ball in the second half on a revitalized Jets defense and a Pittsburgh defense that had been unable to slow anything down over the previous quarter an a half, that the Jets would be in Super Bowl XLV.

But there were two crucial mistakes. One can be shouldered squarely by Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, who instead of simply ramming the ball in four times -- you're bound to get one whole yard if you just keep pushing -- decided to get too cute. Now Schottenheimer can't simply be blamed without being praised. Had it not been for a gutsy deep throw on one of the Jets' early possessions in the second half, New York wouldn't have been in a position to swing the momentum so dramatically. But by calling complex, long-developing plays near the goal line instead of just ramming his running backs at the box, Schottenheimer dropped the ball.

However, the biggest mistake may have been on third down, when Schottenheimer called a quick inside slant that was immediately knocked down and nearly intercepted by Lamarr Woodley. Why that play was called to begin with I won't quite understand, but this truly is an error by quarterback Mark Sanchez, who needs to recognize that Woodley is in the likely path of the pass he needs to throw and immediately audible out of that play -- something he failed to do. The Jets not scoring here caused a fatal turning point, if for no other reason than that they were unable to get the ball back after finally making it a one-score game because there simply wasn't enough time on the clock. And that was the end of New York's second straight postseason heartbreak. Somehow, this wound up being just the second-most offensive thing to happen to New Yorkers this weekend.

That said -- and what I'm about to say is entirely facetious because of course the Jets would rather have won the game -- perhaps it's better that the Jets wound up not winning because the NFL made the absolutely bizarre decision this year to take the George S. Halas Trophy given to the NFC Champion and the Lamar Hunt Trophy, given to the AFC Champion, and turn what were two of the classiest, stateliest trophies in sports and turn them into a bizarre minimalist art exhibit.

Really. It begs the question of, uh, why was this at all necessary?

Fortunately for us, we've got the always reliable Uniwatch to break down the specific changes for us, and less importantly, how he feels about them. Still, this just wreaks of rebranding run amok. Not only was the change unnecessary and were the old trophies, at least in my opinion, incredibly stately, but the new ones kind of look chintzy, cheap and, well lame. Just take one look at how the dinky miniature of Jodie Foster's space travel machine in Contact looks in Steelers owner Art Rooney's hand and compare it with the expressions on Santanio Holmes and Mike Tomlin's faces from two years ago when the won the AFC and were rewarded with a trophy that had some heft to it. It's nearly impossible to hold the damn thing without looking like you're afraid of breaking it. I'm highly skeptical that they would, but here's hoping the NFL realizes the error of its ways.

If not, well, that'll just be par for the course. There are bigger concerns like, say, having to move home games because of a U2 concert. Who knows how the Marlins would respond to, you know, having people in the stands. Could be awkward.

In any event, what's done is done. Now we just have that eternal two-week wait for Super Bowl XLV to kick off between the Steelers and Packers before that even longer winter of our discontent -- which actually happens in summer -- until the next football season. I'll have a whole preview written for next week -- or at least a prediction. I'm not going to explicitly say who I'm picking now, but let's just say there are some outside forces that could give you some idea of where I'm going.

Taxes and Titans

Last night I decided to do two very torturous things to myself:  my taxes and watch Clash of the Titans.  Which should I start with, I will take the lesser of two evils:  taxes.

Taxes
Last year I used TurboTax and it was a good experience, so I figured I would use it again.  One of the things I have discovered is that it does not matter that I give money to charity or that I save my receipts for my work shoes and clothes.  None of these things make my refund any different.

It is also so depressing to look at your gross pay and then see how much you lost in taxes.  This reminds me that I need to set up a 401K, might as well lose that money before the taxes come out.  Also, I wonder if I donate all my comics to charity, if I claim them will that affect my refund?  It would have to, right?

I do recommend using TurboTax if you have a simple tax return and want to get it done and over with.  My return should be in my account in the next eight to fourteen days.  And I have a few plans for that money, but more on that to come later in life.

Clash of the Titans
I heard this movie was terrible, but terrible does not do it justice.  I just did not understand why the hell they felt the need to take the story of Perseus and mangle it all up.  Why was Hades trying to kill Zeus?  In the original myth, Hades helps Perseus by giving him a helmet (or was it a cloak?) that makes him invisible.

I also hated how crappy the Djinn looked.  Wait, why were they even in the movie?  Why did the scorpion scenes feel like a rip-off from Transformers?  Oh, because it was pretty much identical.  And what the hell is Hollywood's fascination with the kraken?  This was not the creature from the original myth, why would you change it?

The biggest irritation was the whole Io subplot.  Why was she even in this movie?  Io was turned in a cow after having sex with Zeus, then she went to Egypt (I cannot remember all her adventures, sue me).  Perseus is supposed to save Andromeda and then marry her.  Granted, I thought that Gemma Arterton was hotter than Alexa Davalos, but it seems like they needed to put a character in to help Perseus and did not want to use Athena (who helps Perseus in the myth).

I would try to say something good about the movie, but there was not that much.  I like Sam Worthington (he was great in Terminator Salvation) and I thought Medusa looked pretty good.  That was one scene where they bumped up the action and it actually was good.

Needless to say, I am glad I did not see this in the theater.  I would have probably got up halfway through and left.

Since I know you are asking who the girl to the left is, I figured I would make you all work it out.  Just kidding, this is Natalia Vodianova, she played Medusa.  Not going to lie, I would stare at her until I turned into stone.

Hollywood, Marriage, Motherhood, and 39%. . . .

This morning, The Today Show ran a very interesting story on the new trend in Hollywood. . . single motherhood. . . flaunted. The story not only looked at how attitudes in Hollywood are changing, but about how what's happening in Hollywood might be changing our attitudes. The clip includes a discussion on culture that's worth your time, and might be worth talking about with your kids in the context of your home or youth group. Topics include the function of culture, celebrities as role models, fathering, parenting, divorce, and single motherhood. At one point, we're told that 39% of Americans now believe that marriage is becoming obsolete. That's where we're headed folks. And we should be talking about it.

Here's the link to the clip. I apologize that it's just a link. I've tried to embed the clip here on the blog, but it keeps embedding a clip about a gorilla! Ok, that might be interesting, but I'm not sure what the gorilla clip has to do with youth culture.

A word of warning for Bob Crow - Don't mess with us Welsh Rugby fans

The on-going dispute between the RMT Union and Arriva Trains Wales took another dramatic, ridiculous twist yesterday when the former turned down a 12% pay increase over 2 years for its train drivers from the latter as reported in today's Western Mail.

If accepted, Arriva state that the offer would've taken the basic rise of an Arriva Trains driver up to £39,117 for a 35-hour four-day week. The RMT Union however claim that in all actuality, the rise is closer to 8% with an extra 2.5% in addition by making it compulsory for drivers to work occasional Sundays.

Either way, the offer in the current difficult economic circumstances nevertheless looks more than generous.

The annual average pay in 2010 for a Teacher for example was £31,852, for a Nurse was £26,184 and for a Social Worker was £25,712. So an increase in pay to the upper £30k pay bracket for Arriva Train Drivers at this moment in time should not be sniffed at.

RMT Strike on Wales Vs England Day
The RMT members voted to strike in protest on December 28th and of the 600 Arriva Trains drivers, some 120 are members of the RMT Union. Of those we are told,  52 decided to strike. But because it's unlikely that drivers from other unions will cross the RMT picket-line, Arriva's entire rail operation on the day of the strike is likely to be affected.

So, what day have the RMT Executive and leader Bob Crow opted for to strike? For maximum impact, quite incredulously, they have chosen Friday, 4th February to do their deed - the day of the opening Six Nations Match between Wales and England in Cardiff's Millennium Stadium.

It is likely that some 20,000 fans will be using the rail to travel to the game and whilst First Great Western and Cross Country services should remain unaffected, this will nevertheless cause great inconveniance to many rugby and sporting fans.

Don't mess with the Welsh Rugby fan Bob
The Western Mail's editorial today hit the nail on the head. It said:

"...strikes are generally doomed to failure unless there is at least some degree of public solidarity with the cause of those taking action. A society gripped with unemployment, inflation and rising prices, and hit this week with yet more dire economic data, will struggle to find sympathy for a group of already well-paid train drivers offered a rise of a mere 12%.

"These people should be grateful that they have jobs, not to mentiion the offer of any kind of pay rise. They should certainly not be targetting the enjoyment of Wales' loyal and enthusiastic rugby followers in a bid to line their pockets.

"It is about time that they accept the generous offer rather than risk creating chaos on one of the biggest nights of the year for Welsh sport".

Don't Take the Proverbial
There isn't much bigger an opponent for us Welsh than the English at Rugby Union. But if Bob Crow and his 52 voting strikers don't back down, Welsh rugby fans may well have found themselves a new opponent to challenge.

Bob Crow is a bully-boy tribalist who gives the Trade Union movement a bad name. If this strike on February 4th is carried out, he'll only be making more Welsh rods for his own back.
