The Mother Monster Lady Gaga just released a Monster music video of her newest Monster single, "Born This Way" which is already topping music and radio charts across the world.

It's almost like a mini movie with all the story-telling in its first part and its length - whew! 7 minutes and 20 seconds!

Oh well, I am a monster! I enjoyed it - so much! Another great job Mama Monster! :D

I am loving Lady Gaga more recently especially after her sweet conversation with her little monster Maria Aragon on the phone. :D

Check out the Monster video below:

Born This Way - Lady Gaga Lyrics

[Intro]
It doesn't matter if you love him,
Or capital H-I-M
Just put your paws up
'cause you were born this way, baby

[Verse 1]
My mama told me when I was young
We are all born superstars

She rolled my hair and put my lipstick on
In the glass of her boudoir

"there's nothin wrong with lovin who you are"
She said, "'cause he made you perfect, babe"

"so hold your head up girl and you'll go far,
Listen to me when I say"

[Chorus]
I'm beautiful in my way
'cause god makes no mistakes
I'm on the right track baby
I was born this way

Don't hide yourself in regret
Just love yourself and you're set
I'm on the right track baby
I was born this way

[Post-chorus]
Ooo there ain't no other way
Baby I was born this way
Baby I was born this way
Ooo there ain't no other way
Baby I was born-
I'm on the right track baby
I was born this way

Don't be a drag - just be a queen
Don't be a drag - just be a queen
Don't be a drag - just be a queen
Don't be!

[Verse 2]
Give yourself prudence
And love your friends
Subway kid, rejoice your truth

In the religion of the insecure
I must be myself, respect my youth

A different lover is not a sin
Believe capital h-i-m (hey hey hey)
I love my life I love this record and
Mi amore vole fe yah (love needs faith)

[Chorus]
I'm beautiful in my way
'cause god makes no mistakes
I'm on the right track baby
I was born this way

Don't hide yourself in regret
Just love yourself and you're set
I'm on the right track baby
I was born this way

Ooo there ain't no other way
Baby I was born this way
Baby I was born this way
Ooo there ain't no other way
Baby I was born-
I'm on the right track baby
I was born this way

[Bridge]
Don't be a drag, just be a queen
Whether you're broke or evergreen
You're black, white, beige, chola descent
You're lebanese, you're orient
Whether life's disabilities
Left you outcast, bullied, or teased
Rejoice and love yourself today
'cause baby you were born this way

No matter gay, straight, or bi,
Lesbian, transgendered life
I'm on the right track baby
I was born to survive
No matter black, white or beige
Chola or orient made
I'm on the right track baby
I was born to be brave

[Chorus]
I'm beautiful in my way
'cause god makes no mistakes
I'm on the right track baby
I was born this way

Don't hide yourself in regret
Just love yourself and you're set
I'm on the right track baby
I was born this way

[Outro]
I was born this way hey!
I was born this way hey!
I'm on the right track baby
I was born this way hey!

I was born this way hey!
I was born this way hey!
I'm on the right track baby
I was born this way hey!

New Ring

Help me decide on which ring to purchase.

$100 Rebate

The other day I received my $100 rebate from Verizon for my new phone.  I decided to use it to buy a bunch of comics.  I know some people thought I was done reading comics, but that was quite far from the truth.  Who knew how many trades $100 could get you?  Let us have a look...

Superman Earth One
This is DC's version of the Ultimate line from Marvel.  It is a retelling of the Superman origin.  Also, J. Michael Straczynski shows how Clark could have went out and done anything.  I really enjoyed the part where he tries out for a pro football team and then goes to a research company and solves some giant chem formula.  He really could do anything, yet he does not know what he wants in life.  It is his parents who want him to be Superman.

I am hoping that they continue doing these, I would love to see where this Superman goes.  I also heard they will do something similar with Batman and Wonder Woman.  Pretty good idea.  I only have one complaint about the book.  It was basically the same as Superman:  Birthright by Mark Waid.  Hell, even the idea of Superman facing off against an alien invasion connected to him being his first battle was the same (although in Birthright, the invasion was created by Lex Luthor).

Preacher:  Alamo
When I lived at State College Park, my roommate (Jackson) had all the Preacher trades and I read them in one night.  It was mind-blowing.  Over time I have picked up a volume here and there.  I just needed the final volume and figured I might as well pick it up.  I forgot how great it ends.  After all the crazy shit that happens, who knew that every character would have a mostly happy ending.

Green Lantern:  The Sinestro Corps War
Everyone always thinks that Green Lantern is my favorite superhero.  Probably because of the ring I used to wear.  Oddly enough, I never really read all that much GL.  I wanted to read all this stuff when it was coming out, but just did not have enough money.

It ended up being a pretty good book.  I am excited to continue reading the rest of this whole War of the Lanterns (or whatever it is called).  I do think that Geoff Johns may have come into my room one night when I was sleeping and read my mind.  Marty and I used to sit around at the Phyrst after those fun comic book club meetings and talk about ideas.  I came up with an idea of a new GL.  One that has the authority to use lethal force.  We also thought maybe he should be some kind of special all-sector lantern (we also tossed around the idea of him having a different color ring).  I even wrote down some notes about his first battle against someone like Darkseid or Mogul.  I also wrote in the notes how he should fight Superman (this was way before they brought back Superboy Prime) and figured it should be an epic battle and in the end, my GL would use his ring to synthesize Kryptonite to defeat him. So, Geoff, if you are reading this, or reading my mind, I have a few more ideas for you.

The Sword:  Earth/Air
This was the final two books from The Luna Brothers newest series.  Earth was pretty weak, but then the fourth book was pretty awesome.  I loved that in the end Dara became the hero yet she died without the sword.  I also loved how Malia came out and announced herself to the world and tried to get them to worship her.  The big reveal at the end was also pretty cool and at first I was going to be annoyed if Phaistos wanted to fight Dara, but him killing himself was a good ending.  For some reason I enjoy the Luna Brothers work.

Justice
The final volume of this saga was a letdown.  Or maybe I should reread the entire series to see if I like it.  At least the art was great.  I felt like the story became a little too odd.  The whole wearing the Metal Men as armor was just weird.

Anyways, this was a good way to spend $100 of free money.

Colin Firth Crowned King at the Oscars (and The King's Speech wins Best Picture Award!)

Well, who would believe it!

That low budget film that I blogged about looking forward to watching here before Christmas has only gone and won the Best Film Oscar in Hollywood!

Best Actor Colin Firth and Best Director Tom Hooper
In in spirited contest with its supposed main rival 'The Social Network', 'The King's Speech' won the big 4 Oscars ovenight. It won for Best Orginial Screenplay, Hooper won the coveted Best Director Award whilst Colin Firth as was widely expected walked off with the award for Best Actor. To crown a fantastic evening, it then won the biggest accoloade going - that for Best Picture which now puts him it alongside Schindler's List, Gandhi, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The Godfather, The Sound of Music, Lawrence of Arabia, West Side Story, Ben-Hur, Casablanca and Gone with the Wind in the pantheon of Hollywood film greats.

It is a quite phenomenal achievement and the British sweep of the main awards on the evening was maintained by Christian Bale's victory in the Best Supporting Actor category in the film 'The Fighter'. Whilst 'The Social Network' only won 2 Oscars in the end, 'Inception' did match 'The King's Speech's haul of 4 statuettes but there's no question which film has taken the main plaudits.

I followed up my original blog post about my interest in the film from a historical perspective with additional posts here and here having watched the film and followed its success over recent weeks and I'm absolutely delighted to add to it with this final piece.

Well done to King Colin! A Royal Performance and Richly Rewarded for it!

whiskey almond biscotti

When a minute amount of snow (at least relative to the slam the middle and eastern portions of this fine country of ours received) found me unexpectedly free last Thursday I decided to put myself to good use. I decided to finally dive into the pile of recipes I've been accumulating and test my skills at baking, something I usually leave to my dear Brigy.

The end result was a spin on the biscotti recipe from Smitten Kitchen, my favorite cooking blog. It wasn't perfect but nonetheless, still quite pleasing.

Whiskey Almond Biscotti (adapted from Smitten Kitchen)

3 1/4 cups all purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/3 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups sugar
10 tablespoons (1 1/4 sticks) unsalted butter, melted
3 large eggs
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoon Corner Creek Bourbon Whiskey (though any whiskey will do, this is just what I had)
1 cup sliced almonds (I would use more next time, and toast them)

1 large egg white

Position rack in center of oven and preheat to 350°F.
Line baking sheet with parchment paper.
Mix flour, baking powder and salt into medium bowl.
Mix sugar, melted butter, 3 eggs, vanilla extract and whiskey in large bowl.
Add flour mixture to egg mixture and stir with wooden spoon until well blended.
Mix in almonds.
Divide dough in half.
Using floured hands, shape each dough half into 13 1/2-inch-long, 2 1/2-inch-wide log. Transfer to prepared baking sheet.
Whisk egg white in small bowl until foamy; brush over top and sides of each dough log.
Bake logs until golden brown (logs will spread), about 30 minutes.
Cool logs completely, about 25 minutes.
Maintain oven temperature.
Transfer logs to work surface; discard parchment paper.
Using serrated knife, cut logs into 1/2-inch-wide slices.
Arrange slices, cut side down, on same baking sheet.
Bake 12 minutes.
Turn biscotti over; bake until just beginning to color, about 8 minutes.
Transfer to rack and cool.

kam-ouflage

Little boy's all ready for rabbit season. Or duck season.

(I could just squeal he is so cute!)

throw your hands up

Oh, yeah, Kamdyn's just raising his hand because he thought someone just asked "Who here can sit up and pull himself up all on his own?"

Apparently, I'm A Masochist. Who Knew?

If being a Mets fan has made anything clear it's that I, apparently, have an insatiable lust for pain. Yesterday I realized that hadn't changed when I got an e-mail from the team offering five-game flex ticket packs for the upcoming season. Typically, I ignore these e-mails because the tickets are too damn expensive, but I was blinded by a huge segment of block text said "NO ORDERING FEES".

You know those things: the transaction fees that enable teams to needlessly add five bucks onto every ticket, but in actuality are complete nonsense.

So I, foolishly assuming I was about to get a deal, promptly bought a Mets flex package for this season, a season that is sure to be disappointing just like they all are. For any evidence of that, look no further than yesterday's spring training opener against Atlanta that ended in a 5-5 tie.

Yes, a tie. In baseball.

Sister kissing is an unusual phenomenon in this sport, which, as we've seen, could theoretically go on forever in a regular season game, but in the spring training no one really has the patience, which means when a game is tied after nine innings, the managers debate whether or not they really care to bake out in the sun much longer. In this case, Terry Collins and Fredi Gonzalez decided that 10 innings would be enough, and it seemed like it would be for Atlanta after they took a 5-3 lead in the top of the inning. Of course, then former-Met killer Willie Harris, who was signed this offseason with the apparent idea of "even if he sucks he won't kill us anymore", smacked a two-run homer to tie the game in the bottom of the 10th, and that was how it would stand. Were it not for my discovery that my supermarket now sells Sunset Wheat, this would have been the highlight of my week.

Considering that this was the second rally by the Mets to tie the game I'm pretty sure Saturday's tie marks the high point of New York's 2011 season. It's all downhill from here.

And when it goes downhill, I'll be there to watch six times. I made a point to pick games in my plan, since it gives you the option of choosing, that were generally in the first half of the season so that my delusions of the Mets still having a chance wouldn't have been shattered yet. Highlights include the Subway Series opener the first weekend of July, a meeting with the defending-champion Giants and Ike Davis bobblehead day on July 19th against St. Louis.

Now comes the hard part. Finding six people dumb enough to go to each game with me.

In other news, some of you might have noticed that the Oscars are tonight and I, something of an Oscar junkie as you can see from some of my zanier columns in the past, am as excited as always even though I somehow managed not to see half the Best Picture nominees this year. I bring this up because I came across a rather startling discovery this afternoon involving one of my favorite films of all time, L.A. Confidential. For those of you who have seen L.A. Confidential you know that it is, well, incredible in every way. As such, it is a constant reminder to me that the Oscars are total bunk since L.A. Confidential lost Best Picture in 1997 to some boat movie.

Either way, what I did not realize is that one of the stars of the film, Guy Pearce, who so deftly pulled off a turn as the film's protagonist Lieutenant Edmund Exley, is also a tremendous sports fan. This I should have assumed because he's also Australian and Australians love their sports. And most importantly, they love their footy.

And Guy Pearce loves his footy.

But almost more important than the fact that Guy Pearce loves his footy is that he loves one footy team in particular. And it's the right one. I was entirely unaware that Pearce grew up on his mother's deer farm in Geelong, where he endured a rough 40 years of his life before he finally saw the Cats get their first championship since four years before he was born. As far as Geelong fans go, apparently Pearce is one of the more famous ones, something that the club has noted on its own website for no apparent reason other than to say "We have a celebrity that roots for us."

Pearce is apparently such a big fan of the club that he was the no-brainer choice to narrate a special video segment on the most crucial moment of Geelong's 2009 Grand Final victory over St. Kilda.

It makes one wonder if Pearce had a bet on the match with Eric Bana, a diehard St. Kilda fan who was shown on TV in the crowd of the Grand Final that day about every four seconds or so.

In any event, it's nice to know that the main man of one of my favorite films shares a bizarre team in kind with me. Unfortunately, Pearce isn't up for any Oscars tonight, nor did L.A. Confidential take home the big prize 14 years ago, but the 2007 and 2009 Grand Final victories are far more meaningful anyway.

Besides, it could be worse. He could have been duped into buying Mets tickets.

Dancing on Ice (The Final 7) - Judge Cole's Verdict

Last week saw me miss the show and my blogging commentary was brief. Well tonight, I'm back!

Kerry Katona was voted out last week and all that can be said about that is that she did well to last this long in the competition.

Tonight we saw the final 7 contestants perform rhythms from around the world. It was a greatly enjoyable, internationalist feel to the evening.

The Final 7 - Riverdance on Ice!
The first rhythm from around the world was from the USA as Laura Hamilton danced on ice to the Charleston. She opened the night with a fun and really good charleston performance. She continues to remain one of the series favourites.

Next up was Jeff Brazier who again had to fight back from finishing in the skate-off the previous week. This time he was dancing the Waltz from Austria. He gave a much better performance with some good, solid lifts. The result was his highest score to date which puts him back into the mix at the top of the leaderboard. If he can keep his consistency, he could get to the final but there's no certainty of that yet.

Next up was Denise Welch with a Briazilian Samba. She gave a typically sassy performance although I felt it wasn't quite as quick a routine as the carnival music sound required. Her scores marked a slip back from her highest score from last week and she could be in trouble this week.

Next up was Vanilla Ice dancing to a Spanish Flamenco vibe. It was quite mesmeric. He gave a great performance and really got into the 'matador' character. Another excellent run of scores shows that his consistency is improving and that makes him a real dark horse to win this competition.

Next up was Sam Attwater with the Irish Riverdance. This demanded a really quick routine and he delivered! I love the Riverdance music and he gave a fantastic performance of it. It was an entrancing sight! It delivered him the first 9 scores of the series and he got them across the board for a series best overall score of 27 out of 30! After slipping back last week he was back with a bang this week! Bravo!

Our penultimate skater of the night was Chloe Madely with a Middle Eastern rhythm. It was a stylish routine and the final lift was great - it worried me as I thought she'd topple over but full credit for the result. She got her best result of the series to date and if she can continue in this vein she may well surprise me and stick around until the final.

Last but potentially least was Johnson Beharry with a Tango. He gave a rather expressionless performance I felt but actually, it was a decent overall routine. But it was lacking a certain something - class.

The Skate-Off
So, we had series best performances tonight by Jeff, Sam and Chloe. They should all be fine this week. Vanilla Ice and Laura also gave high quality performances and should be safe.

Denise however, did slip back this week I felt. It'd be nice to see her survive as I'm a fan but I think her time in the competition is now drawing to a respectable close. Johnson meanwhile showed more steady progress but surely his time must be running out?

The top 5 are a class apart from Denise and Johnson and these latter two should be in the skate-off.

Time will tell however and I'll update this post after the results...

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

UNBELIEVABLE

Well that it is a crazy shock. Admittedly as I mentioned above, Vanilla Ice and Laura hadn't turned in series best performances tonight but they were still a class apart from Denise and Johnson.

These were both potential series winners and now, Vanilla has gone. Of the two, I expected the judges to save Laura and in the round, I think that's a fair judgement.

But still, it's a big shock to lose Vanilla Ice. He was improving and as I said earlier in this blog piece above I had him down as a dark horse to go on and win the competition. I've been a fan of his from early on in the series and his personality will be sorely missed.

I'm off to put my head into a sink of cold water to get over the shock of it.

STOP THE PRESS - THE UNITED NATIONS BARES ITS LIBYAN TEETH

I'm actually rather proud of the United Nations this morning.

Amidst the carnage and mayhem unfolding in Lybia at this moment, the United Nations voted in the early hours of this morning GMT to impose sanctions on Colonel Gaddafi's regime.

Not only did it do so, but it actually did so unanimously.

As an internationalist, I'm a big fan of the concept of the United Nations. Indeed, one of the greatest thrills of my life (it's sad I know) was when I visited the UN HQ in New York City back in 2005. Actually seeing for myself the Security Council and General Assembly chambers was awe-inspiring. For it is in these rooms that decisions by the international community should be made for the well-being of the common good of humanity.

Idealism Vs Real-Politik
The problem of course is that in the real world, 'Real-politik' gets in the way of what sometimes may be perceived as getting the right and just decisions to be made. National interests take precedence as votes are often weighed up on the practical and pragmatic grounds affecting each member state.

The permanent veto of the 'Big 5' (China, France, Russia, UK and USA) members on the security council most aptly demonstrates this diplomatic conundrum.

Political impasse and a perceived inability to agree a firm resolution to a global concern has dogged the UN throughout its existence. The need for broad agreement amongst partisan member states has often led to diplomatic deadlock and the sense that for all its worth, the UN is nothing more than a talking shop.

Resolution 1970
Well, I was myself non-too happy when I heard the UN Security Council's toughly worded response to the Lybian situation at the start of this week. Yes it was a strongly worded response to the atrocities, but when the Libyan deputy ambassador to the UN talks of 'genocide' in his country, what use is strong words on a piece of paper for the people of the streets of Tripoli?

So it was with a real sense of pride in the UN that I heard it's unanimous decision overnight to...
  • Impose a complete arms imbargo on Libya
  • Impose travel bans and an asset freeze on Libyan leaders
  • Immediately refer the deadly crackdown on protestors to the International Criminal Court in the Hague
  • Introduce new steps against the use of mercanaries by the Libyan government against its own people
Does this go far enough? In my opinion, no. At the very least, there should be a no-fly zone imposed above the country to protect the citizens on the ground from being attacked by its own government from the air.

But as UN General Secretary Ban Ki-Moon stated, even bolder actions may be needed in the days ahead.

But whilst that bolder action may well be required and in my opinion this is already the case, let's not underestimate what the UN did today.

Not only has it unanimously agreed tough sanctions against the Libyan leadership, but it has also, for the first time in its 65 year history, voted unaninously as a collective of 15 sovereign states, to make a referral to the International Criminal Court in the Hague.

I had heard as I went to sleep last night that 14 of the 15 states had agreed to the draft resolution - namely the USA, UK, France, Russia and the 10 non-permanent members (currently serving on a 2 year rota until the end of this year) Bosnia and HerzegovinaBrazil, GabonLebanon, NigeriaColombia, Germany, India, Portugal and South Africa. The 15th country to not have agreed the draft I gathered was permanant member and veto wielding China whose diplomats were communicating with Beijing to seek approval to support the agreement. My concern on going to bed was that I would wake up and find that China as has happened in the past, would de-rail the resolution by opposing it or make it less powerful by abstaining in the ballot.

But it is to China's credit and the credit of the 14 other member states of the Security Council that  they have shown themselves and the apparatus of the UN as the beacon of internationalism, to be united against the Libyan atrocities.

This was a good day for the UN, for inernational diplomacy and for the concept of the preservation of world peace.

“Hindi po totoo ang balita. Nakausap po ng mga taga-Actors Guild si Joko at sinabi niya mismo na hindi patay ang kanyang ama,” informed Balagtas.

Joko, a son of Diaz, is a member of KAPPT board of directors.

In 2002, Diaz suffered a stroke, causing his health to deteriorate. He was recently rushed to a hospital in Bicol because of an illness.

Diaz, also known as Kits in show business, is confined at the Estevez Memorial Hospital in Legazpi City, Albay.

The actor, Francisco Bustillos Diaz in real life, was born on May 28, 1937 in Pampanga.

Diaz was introduced in the movie “Son of Fung Ku.” He has done hundreds of films but gained iconic status as the villain in many films with the late Fernando Poe Jr. –ANC and Boy Villasanta, abs-cbnNEWS.com

(Erratum: We inadvertently reported earlier that actor Paquito Diaz passed away. We apologize for the mistake)

The original news report was written at 3:25 PM and the update came out at 5:45PM. At 12:00 AM today, Pilipino Star Ngayon also reported the death of the actor which again is just a rumor. I wonder if it is the 'newspaper' that the above ABS-CBN report pertains to.

Here's a screenshot of the Pilipino Star Ngayon Report:

Hmmmmm.. Issue... Issue... I hope noone gets to be fired from work after this.

Fianna Fail in Meltdown - Early Irish Election Results

The STV election results in Ireland really are fascinating. It will only be tomorrow afternoon that we should have the final results from yesterday's count but the early results back-up what the opinion polls were suggestion in the lead-up to the poll.

The RTE website here are showing detailed coverage of the results as they trickle in. At 6.55pm many constituencies had announced the first count results whilst others are still counting.

Of the results currently in, the latest figures are as follows...

Fine Gael - 35.3%
Labour - 22%
Fianna Fáil - 17.2%
Sinn Féin - 8.4%
Green Party - 2.2%

On the early results, Fianna Fáil are down by 20%-25% on their 2007 result and are indeed heading, as I mentioned in my blog post here, for their worst election result since 1932.

Fine Gael are indeed looking set to become the biggest party in the Irish Parliament with the Labour Party also heading towards their best ever result. Sinn Féin are also looking to double their representation at Fianna Fáil's expense.

But the final results will be determined by the transfers over the course of the next 24 hours and in what is an unprecedented election, it's impossible to second-guess how the first preferences will split further down the ballot.

But we'll know the final scores soon enough...

Filipino-Americans Clint Jun Gamboa, Thia Megia join American Idol 10 Top 24!

American Idol Season 10 is getting more exciting for Noypi viewers since 2 of our "kababayans" made it to the Top 24!

Clint Jun Gamboa, a 26 year-old karaoke bar host, and Thia Megia, a 15 year-old student, have both proven that they have the potential of becoming the next American Idol. They have been selected as 2 of the 24 finalists of the show who will perform live next week.

Clint Jun Gamboa is from Long Beach, California. He said to have won one of the biggest karaoke contests in Southern California, 2 years in a row. He also wrote a song for the 2003 movie, "The Room".

Stigma still surrounds Clint Jun after the Jacee Badeaux incident (read here) but he has been showing that he got what it takes to be the next Idol. Noone can't deny that he got a powerful voice.

Mountain House, California resident Thia Megia previously joined "America's Got Talent" where she was a quarterfinalist. She also appeared on The Filipino Channel (TFC) after the talent competition. She started writing her own songs as early as 6 years old.

Thia's American Idol journey has been flawless so far. The judges seem to like the amazing talent of the teenager.

Although I find it annoying sometimes since some are exaggerating when they use it, but Clint and Thia are truly Filipino Pride. I wish them all the luck in the world since they already got the talent. :D

Erwan Heussaff, Sam Milby meet face to face at a party | Poll: Who do you like for Anne Curtis? Erwan or Sam?

What happens when the ex-boyfriend of Anne Curtis, Sam Milby and her current boo, Erwan Heussaff meet face to face?

“Nothing ano, [nothing] bad at all,” was how Sam described it when he got the chance to bump into Erwan recently at celebrity stylist Liz Uy's birthday party.

“Even when I was there talagang wala kaming problema or anything like that. 'How you doin’?' Gano’n lang. Fun talaga,” Sam told SNN.

--------------------------------------------------------------

As a fan, I am happy for Anne since she looks so happy having Erwan around.

But just for fun eh since our current poll is about to end. I just wanna know if there are still those who haven't moved on yet and still missing Sam and Anne together (Kismets fans?). Haha. Here's a poll question for you:

Who do you like for Anne Curtis? Erwan Heussaff or Sam Milby? :D

To help you out here are pictures of Anne with Erwan and photos of her with Sam:
