A Little About the Future

Hey there!  This is Josh from the future.  Actually from the year 2130.  Seriously, no bullshit.  I know what you are thinking, how the hell can you be from the future?  Well scientists figured out time travel a few years back and they also figured out that you can go as far back as you want.  Do not ask too many questions, do I look like a scientist?

I realize your next question is probably "how are you still alive, you are 150 years old???"  Yeah, I am pretty old, but that is not too significant anymore.  Scientists figured out how to extend the lifespan of people, the average person now lives to about 200 years old.  Again, I am no scientist, so do not bother asking how this happened.

Now that we have all that kind of crap out of the way, you probably want to know what has been happening in the world.  Well that is what I am here to tell you.

Politics
Things turned to shit in this country in the 2030s.  The economy sucked, the rest of the world surpassed us, we had serious problems.  It did not help that people were living to over 120 on average, yet the retirement was still 70.  Yeah, no one could figure out what the hell was wrong in the world.

Then the people elected Juan Rodriguez, our first Latino president (hey, in this entire time, we have still not had a woman president, haha, suck it feminists--just kidding).  He had radical ideas, one of them was raising the retirement age to 120.  He also decided to legalize marijuana and then tax the shit out of it.  He then decided to force Mexico to be part of the United States, divided it up into eight states.  Pretty much made the place a giant resort.  The rest of the place was used to cultivate weed (which was basically all they did down there to begin with).

All those fears about drugs ruining the country turned out to be false, people pretty much only smoked dope on special occasions.  Especially when the laws for other drugs became insane.  Caught with a little cocaine?  50 years in prison.  Tested positive for heroin?  Penal colony in Mexico.  People began studying and focusing more on becoming intelligent.  This became our greatest export:  knowledge.  Medical, computer, technological, whatever advancement you can think of pretty much happened here.

Technology
Speaking of tech, you are undoubtedly wondering what the world is like in the future.  It took me about ten minutes to remember how to type.  We do everything with our minds now.  So much easier.  I do have some bad news though, still no flying cars.  No land-speeders, none of that cool shit.  Cars are cool now and they use an alternative fuel source.  I cannot mention what though, it would blow your mind, I will give you a hint:  you put it in your coffee.

Sports
I do not want to spoil anything, but the Pirates eventually win the World Series.  I am not even kidding.  I will not say what year, but when they do win it, cherish the hell out of it.  You will not see another one.  Depressing, I know.

The Steelers win a bunch of Super Bowls.  After Ben retires, they draft a QB who is 6'7, 280, runs a 4.1 40 and can throw the ball 90 yards (some people believe he may be the first genetically engineered athlete, we fans say stop being jealous).  The Pens also win a bunch of Stanley Cups, so you will always have those two to make you happy.

The Yankees sign the first player to a $1,000,000,000 contract.  He is a short-stop from Ireland and ends up breaking the HR record.  He hits over 900.  They win a shit ton of World Series with him, most consider it a good investment.

People in America still do not give a shit about soccer.

Random Stuff
-George R.R. Martin finally finishes A Song of Ice and Fire in 2056.  You were right, Jon is Rhaegar's son.  He and Daenarys rule the entire world.  Hope that does not ruin it for ya.

-Movie franchises start combining and become absolutely ridiculous, such as Fast and the Furious 21:  The Rise of the Raging Transformers.  Or Saw 87:  Jigsaw vs. James Bond

Oh and the most important thing is about your own future Josh:  You will end up
OH SHIT!  HERE COMES THE TIME-COP, I NEED TO RUN FOR IT!

The Ed Miliband Media Car Crash

I was speechless when I saw this BBC interview with Ed Miliband yesterday. It was one of the most gut-wrenchingly awful media performances I've seen from the Labour Party leader.

Whatever your view on the strikes yesterday, Miliband's muddle was excruciatingly painful to watch. His parrot-like repetition of the same tried and tested lines spoke of a man clearly ill at ease with his script, knowing as he did that he was walking a near impossible tightrope of trying to appease his own party whilst not being painted into a corner by 'middle Britain'. He sounded wooden and stilted and thoroughly un-natural.

The final question was truly awful. Given an opportunity to provide some humanity as a father of children, he just trotted out the same line that he'd worn out over the previous 2 minutes.

Who is Ed's media consultant? Because if someone honestly told him that this was the way to interview then they need really should consider a new career in watching paint dry.

For my sanity Ed and for the sake of your leadership of the Labour Party, sort it out before your Party sort you out instead.

No One But You (Only The Good Die Young)

It's been a tough few days. Indeed, as June closes, I look back at what has been a distressing month.

I've already commented about the sad and premature death of Andrew Reeves at only 43 of a heart attack and of my journey to his funeral in Edinburgh. The following week I attended the funeral of a well respected elder statesman of the Cardigan community who passed away in his early 90s.

Over the course of the past week I've done my best to support Alyson as her family have prepared their farewells to her grandmother who also passed away, aged 94. On leaving the funeral yesterday and coming back north from Llanboidy to Cardigan, I heard the heart-breaking news of the premature death of a lovely lady who though is only related to me through marriage, has along with her husband and children, always felt a part of my wider family. She was only in her 60s and it just made me despair again at how, as the old saying goes, 'only the good die young'. It very much brought to the fore the memories of my father's early death back in 2003 at the age of 66. Last night I broke down in tears for the first time in a number of years and I'm thankful that I had Alyson there to console me.

So as a tribute to all of those who have passed before their time, one of the most under-rated of songs from the best band of all-time.

No One But You
The impetus for this Queen production was the death, at the age of just 36, of Princess Diana in August 1997. It is however, largely a eulogy to Freddie Mercury who passed away aged just 45 in 1991.

The song features the three remaining members of Queen and was the last new recording to feature John Deacon, who subsequently retired from public life.

Queen - No One But You (Only The Good Die Young)... by M_Ouyhey

It is a truly moving piece of music and the video for me adds to the poigniancy of the lyrics, sang so well by Brian May and Roger Taylor.

Maria and her amazing camera caught this excellent series of Jack winding up for the wail (we think he looks like Dana Carvey in the second one!).

Albie Casiño or Jake Ejercito? Who is the father of Andi Eigenmann's baby?

Albie Casiño and Andi Eigenmann
Who is the father of Andi Eigenmann's baby? This is the big question right now after Andi's pregnancy was confirmed by her mom, veteran actress Jaclyn Jose, on TV Patrol, last night.
Jaclyn did not name who impregnated her 21-year old daughter but she said it's Andi's first boyfriend.

Since they were the only two who were reported to have been in a relationship with the young actress, Kapamilya actor Albie Casiño and Erap's son Jake Ejercito are on the hotseat right now - one of them could be the father of Andi's baby.

In her Twitter account, Andi Eigenmann finally talked about the issue, clearing up Jake Ejercito's name and giving a hint on the identity of the father of the child she is bearing.

"For your better understanding, I've only had one boyfriend before Jake whom I've only been seeing for the past 2 months. Therefore, Jake cannot be the said ex-boyfriend whom everyone has been talking about. #commonsense," Andi tweeted Thursday night.

Jake Ejercito and Andi Eigenmann
This can only mean one thing. There was no other guy who was reported to be Andi's ex-boyfriend other than Albie Casiño. So it would have to be Albie, right? But until he is directly named, this conclusion is not yet 100% accurate I guess.

Meanwhile, Albie Casiño, 18, is still mum but his mom had said her piece on the issue. In an interview with Ogie Diaz, Mrs. Anna Kathrina Casiño reportedly said, ""Walang problema kung anak ko nakabuntis ke Andi. Blessing yan. And we welcome DNA Test."

Hmmmmm.... Feel free to comment below.

The Voice. . . And What It Said. . .

I was a casual observer of "The Voice," the NBC singing competition that - in my opinion - was much more engaging and fun than "American Idol." If you followed the show, you know that Javier Colon was crowned "the voice" on last night's show. I caught the final moment thanks to some timely channel flipping. I'll admit it. . . the Phillies/Red Sox game was just a little more important to me last night.

So let me clarify why I think "The Voice" was a little more engaging and fun than the other show. There was the involvement of the coaches. The personalities had a chance to blossom and bloom. The production was better. Again, just my opinion. But these are a few of the reasons why I found the concept fascinating.

There was, however, a down side. If you watched "The Voice" from a posture of Christian critique you may have noticed the show's edge. I'm not a prude, but "The Voice" is a great example of a cultural piece that both reflects and directs - or mirrors and maps - life in today's world. Things were said, done, and sung that were quite telling. These are things we should be seeking to see and hear so that we are better equipped to say, do, and sing the Kingdom of God in ways that truly engage the culture and its confused commitments. This is our missionary task.

If you're a person who takes this task and calling seriously, I would encourage you to make it a priority to get your kids - who see and hear what's said, done, and sung as nothing but normal - to think critically and Christianly. Engage them in thoughtful conversation where "The Voice" is filtered through the lens of God's Word. Teach them to celebrate the good. Teach them to prophetically challenge that which is not good.

Need a starting point? My channel-surfing two nights ago took me back to "The Voice" and it's second-to-last show between innings of the Phillies/Red Sox. I got stuck on "The Voice" and Pitbull and Ne-Yo's performance of "Give Me Everything" - currently the #2 song on the Billboard charts. Telling. Remember, it maps out life for viewers and mirrors life in our culture as it already is. You can watch it below. I've included the lyrics beneath the embedded video. Do we have anything at all to say, sing, or do in response?

Me not working hard?
Yea, right! Picture that with a Kodak
Or, better yet, go to Times Square
Take a picture of me with a kodak
Took my life from negative to positive

I just want y'all know that
And tonight, let's enjoy life
Pitbull, Nayer, Ne-Yo
Tell us right

[Chorus:]
[Ne-Yo]
Tonight I want all of you tonight
Give me everything tonight
For all we know we might not get tomorrow
Let's do it tonight

[Nayer]
Don't care what they say
All the games they play
Nothing is enough
'Til they handle love

[Ne-Yo]
Let's do it tonight

[Nayer]
I want you tonight,
I want you to stay
I want you tonight

[Ne-Yo]
Grab somebody sexy, tell 'em hey
Give me everything tonight
Give me everything tonight
Give me everything tonight
Give me everything tonight

[Verse 1: Pitbull]
Take advantage of tonight
Cause tomorrow I'm also doin' bad
Perform for a princess
But tonight, I can make you my queen
And make love to you endless
This is insane: the way the name growin'
Money keep flowin'
Hustlers move aside
So, I'm tiptoein', to keep flowin'
I got it locked up like Lindsay Lohan

Put it on my life, baby,
I make you feel right, baby
Can't promise tomorrow
But, I promise tonight
Dale

[Pre-Chorus: Pitbull]
Excuse me
And I might drink a little more than I should tonight
And I might take you home with me, if I could tonight
And, baby, Ima make you feel so good, tonight
Cause we might not get tomorrow

[Chorus:]
[Ne-Yo]
Tonight I want all of you tonight
Give me everything tonight
For all we know we might not get tomorrow
Let's do it tonight

[Nayer]
Don't care what they say
Or what games they play
Nothing is enough
'Til they handle love

[Ne-Yo]
Let's do it tonight

[Nayer]
I want you tonight, I want you to stay
I want you tonight

[Ne-Yo]
Grab somebody sexy, tell 'em hey
Give me everything tonight
Give me everything tonight
Give me everything tonight
Give me everything tonight

[Verse 2: Pitbull]
Reach for the stars
And if you don't grab 'em,
At least you'll fall on top of the world
Think about it
Cuz if you slip,
I'm gon' fall on top yo girl (hahaa)
What I'm involved with
Is deeper than the masons
Baby, baby, and it ain't no secret
My family's from Cuba
But I'm an American Idol
Get money like Seacrest

Put it on my life, baby
I make you feel right, baby
Can't promise tomorrow
But, I promise tonight
Dale

[Pre-Chorus: Pitbull]
Excuse me
But I might drink a little bit more than I should tonight
And I might take you home with me if I could tonight
And baby imma make you feel so goof tonight
Cause we might not get tomorrow

[Chorus:]
[Ne-Yo]
Tonight I want all of you tonight
Give me everything tonight
For all we know, we might not get tomorrow
Let's do it tonight

[Nayer]
Don't care what they say
All the games they play
Nothing is enough

I want you tonight, I want you to stay
I want you tonight

[Ne-Yo]
Grab somebody sexy, tell 'em hey
Give me everything tonight
Give me everything tonight
Give me everything tonight
Give me everything tonight

[Outro: Pitbull]
Excuse me
But I might drink a little bit more than I should tonight
And I might take you home with me if I could tonight
And imma make you feel so good tonight
Cause we might not get tomorrow

You Know, I Really Just Don't Get This Team Sometimes

Pick one. Seriously, just pick one. I can accept if you're bad. I'd love it if you're good. But I can't deal with uncertainty, and if the Mets continue to stun and surprise me by being competitive without their ace pitcher, all-star third baseman, slugging first baseman and, well, any competent hitting out of left field or a member of the rotation who before the season would have gotten you excited, I'm going to have no clue what to think.

Doesn't this team realize I planned my summer around them not being interesting?

This was supposed to be something of a rebuilding year, and while the Mets did have talent on the roster this spring, that delightful injury bug which always seems to snag them was surely going to keep them from competing. Hell, Johan Santana was already out before the season started. Given the likely hardships in Flushing this year, I planned accordingly, purchasing a season ticket package in which all of the games were done by mid-July.

When the season started the Mets opened with a robust 5-13 record through their first 18 games, David Wright and Ike Davis both went down with injuries, low risk/high reward pitcher Chris Young went out for the season and Jason Bay returned to perform as if he may as well never come back.

But all of the sudden, that all seems like ancient history. The Mets have only lost one series in the month of June, they just took two out of three from the defending American League champions -- on the road, no less -- the offense has scored 36 runs in the last three games, and New York is actually over .500 for the first time since April 6 at 40-39. The Mets are five games back of the Wild Card with 83 games still left in the season. Of the four teams ahead of them two (Pittsburgh and Arizona) are probably good bets to fade over the course of the season, one (St. Louis) will be without its best player for 4-6 weeks, and the last one (Atlanta) lost both series it played against New York in the past month.

Don't these people know I planned a three-week trip to Europe for next month assuming I'd miss nothing of interest?

As if all that wasn't zany enough, yesterday this happened. Yeah, that's right, the Mets, who had gone nearly two years without hitting a grand slam, hit two in back-to-back innings in a 14-3 shallacking of the Detroit Tigers. That's absurd even if they weren't the only people to do it yesterday. They're hitting, they're slugging, they look, dare I say, happy, Terry Collins looks brilliant, and they're still missing two perennial all-stars and one potential future one.

What the hell is going on?

I'm as speechless as the next Mets fan, and it's probably because I just can't figure it out. I mean, what could the secret be? Are they removing pieces of clothing one by one off a cardboard standup of Fred Wilpon? At this moment that's the only solution I can come up with.

I do want to make it clear that I'm not complaining about this. I'm just confused. The 2011 New York Mets, through almost half a season, are showing an amount of pluck and moxie that I'm simply not accustomed to seeing from them. Whether or not they can keep this up is something we'll probably find out in the next two weeks. New York's current pre-All-Star Break schedule is not exactly a pleasant one. After the current three-game set against Detroit, who is leading the AL Central mind you, the Amazins wrap up the Subway Series with three games at Citi Field against the Yankees before going across the country to face the Dodgers and NL West-leading/defending World Series champion San Francisco Giants.

Honestly, how many teams have to visit both of the previous year's World Series participants in a three-week span?

Oh, and after the All-Star Break, the Mets put the rubber on the road right away with three games against the Phillies. So yeah. It won't be easy. And somewhere around July 18th, we'll have a reasonable idea of whether or not this current hot streak is reality or yet another painful mirage. Don't look for an answer from me though. The morning of July 18th I'll be waking up in an apartment in Berlin. At that point, I'll have been out of the country for eight days so I may not be the best person to ask.

Then again, I may never be. After all, I wasn't expecting this.

Jam of the Week

When Jan Vesely's name was announced as the 6th overall pick for the Washington Wizards in the 2011 NBA Draft, ESPN's Fran Fraschilla boldly predicted (post famous smooch) that Vesely would someday hoist the Sprite Slam Dunk Contest trophy. This week's dunk goes out to Jan and his high flying ability, as well as his unprecedented Euro-swag.

Andi Eigenmann 'pregnant' says mother Jaclyn Jose

Andi Eigenmann is pregnant! Veteran actress Jaclyn Jose, Andi's mother confirmed the report in an interview with TV Patrol, earlier. Jaclyn, who was emotional in the interview, said Andi decided to keep the baby whose father is said to be Andi's first boyfriend. The guy said to have left Andi when he found out about the young actress conceiving a child.

The TV Patrol report added that Andi Eigenmann, who is now 21 years old, is exactly 18 weeks 2 days pregnant.

Before Jaclyn broke her silence, a blind item in a fashion website has been around for days implying that Andi Eigenmann is pregnant.

At the moment, Andi is being romantically linked with Jake Ejercito, son of former President Joseph Estrada and actress Laarni Enriquez.

Just last month, Andi was involved in a "cyberwar" with ex-boyfriend Albie Casiño. It appears now that it was a 'double burden' for the actress then since she was already pregnant that time when Albie called her a "cheater."

Belgrano sink River Plate? Hold the Front Page!

It's one of the most famous front page headline images in British press history.

When the British sank the Argentinian Navy light cruiser the Belgrano on May 2nd 1982, it resulted in the death of 323 Argentinians - just over half of their total death toll during the Falklands War.

The Sun's notorious front page summed up what was for many, a jingo-istic campaign. It was also controversial because it was said that the Belgrano was both outside the exclusion zone and also pointing away from the Falkland Islands and towards Argentina when it was struck.

It was named after Argentina's Founding Father Manuel Belgrano.

Club Atlético Belgrano
Argentina's Founding Father was also the inspiration in 1905 for the formation of a football team based in Córdoba.

Having yo-yo'ed between the Argentinian First and Second Divisions over recent decades, they sent shock waves through Argentinian football this week when they defeated River Plate in a promotion/relegation play-off.

It was this article in yesterday's Independent that brought this incredible footballing story to my attention.

River Plate are the Manchester United of Argentinian football. They have won a record 33 Argentinian titles in their long and proud 110-year history as well as a number of intercontinental trophies (the equivalent to our Champions League in Europe) and have never, yes that's right, NEVER, been relegated since they were formed in 1901.

Juan Manuel Belgrano
As a world-wide football fan (which I owe in no small part to the Championship Manager football management computer series!), the concept of River Plate being relegated struck me as being extraorindary. As the Independent article explains, it is even more so because relegation is determined over a 3 year, 6 mini season time-period so it works in favour of Argentina's main teams. But incredibly, River Plate have had an awful past 3 seasons since winning their last title in 2008 and found themselves as a result on points average, in a relegation play-off.

It was seeing that that play-off opponent was indeed Belgrano that caught my attention in addition.

Belgrano? As in that Argentinian Ship that got sunk during the Falklands? Has now in turn sunk Argentina's most successful ever football-team?

There is of course no link between the ship and club apart from their both being named after the same individual but for a historian like me who is also interested in sport, it was one of those quirky bits of coincidence that caught my eye.

What would Juan Manuel Belgrano make of it I couldn't say.

Grace Lee 'gwapa' says PNoy

Grace Lee, the co-host at an event in Cebu where President Noynoy Aquino (PNoy) was the guest speaker, is the talk of the town right now after PNoy made a 'special mention' in his speech on Grace being "gwapa" (Visayan term for "beautiful (woman)").

"Bago ho ako magumpisa mayroon lang akong itatanong kay Governor Gwen sana, kung puwe-puwede ho. Gov. Gwen: mahimo bang mangutana nganu man sa kada bisita nako dinhi sa Cebu, mas daghang gwapa apil si Governor Gwen," PNoy started.

["Before I start, I just would like to ask Governor Gwen why each time I visit here (in Cebu), there are more beautiful women including Governor Gwen.]

"Pati ‘yung bisita nating si Ms. Grace Lee ‘kala ko tuloy Pinay, eh. Di nga pala, Korean. Pero pati Korean na dumadating talagang guwapa lahat," PNoy continued.

[Including our visitor Ms. Grace Lee - I thought she's Filipina. But I was wrong. She's Korean. But also, all Koreans who are coming here are all beautiful.]

In a GMA-7 interview, Lee said, “It’s all a compliment and it’s all ended there so no big deal.”

Lee is also grateful for the compliment saying in an interview with the Manila Bulletin, “I mean, I was very flattered so I thanked Mr. President for, you know, for saying that about me.”

(Noypi's Notes: But we don't know, right? When have you heard the President to be this vocal about expressing his admiration? Maybe he is going to date her as well. :D)

Grace Lee (real name: Kyung Hee Lee) who is Half Filipino and Half Korean, is a disc jockey and an entertainment news anchor on "24 Oras Weekend Edition." She is also co-hosting "Diz Is It" on GMA7.

Born and raised in Korea, Grace migrated with her family to the Philippines when she was age 10 because of her dad’s business. She is a graduate of AB Interdisciplinary Studies (Communication and Chinese Studies) at Ateneo de Manila University.

Lee was once linked to Kris Aquino's beleaguered husband, James Yap.

Kate Middleton 'walks' with Princess Diana on Newsweek Cover

Kate Middleton, Dutchess of Cambridge, "walks" alongside with her mother-in-law Princess Diana on the cover of the latest issue of Newsweek magazine. The photo-shopped cover is part of a speculative story imagining what the life of late Princess Diana, who would be celebrating her 50th birthday on July 1st, would be if she were still living today.

The author of the feature story Tina Brown also offers her opinions on where Princess Diana would be living (New York), Diana's probable influence in social media sites and the Princess' jealousy over Kate Middleton who married her son.

Reports say that people find the feature interesting but others especially seeing pictures of the People's Princess "back from the dead" find it a bit creepy.

Here's a photo of a fake Princess Diana Facebook fanpage and another photo-shopped picture of Princess Diana holding an iPhone which were part of the article.

Colorful new species discovered in the Philippines

More than 300 species that are likely new to science were discovered by researchers from the California Academy of Sciences and the University of the Philippines during an expedition which lasted for more than a month last spring in Luzon, Philippines. Among the organisms found were a number of new insects and spiders, more than 50 colorful new sea slugs and several deep-sea armored corals.

Here are a few of them:

Kapamilya actress Angelica Panganiban is gracing the cover of Metro Magazine's July 2011 issue. Check out the cover photo below:

Angelica Panganiban, featured on the cover of the July 2011 issue of Metro Magazine

Said to be a "beauty" issue, this July 2011 Metro Magazine issue also showcases the mag's annual Beauty Awards and loads of other interesting stories that will show you the many different facets of beauty. It is now available in your favorite newsstands and bookstores.

Aside from being regularly seen on ABS-CBN gag show "Banana Split", Angelica Panganiban is reportedly shooting a movie with Kapamilya heartthrob Piolo Pascual. And despite the many controversial, her relationship with hunk Derek Ramsey seem to remain strong. :D
