Sunday television was not all that good this week. Quick stuff about the three shows I watched.
The Glades The show is going downhill with the whole Jim and Callie being awkward towards each other. This episode was about a killer at a Pentecostal church. They tried very hard to push one character on us and anyone with half a brain knew it was the other person. The only positive was Jim completely mocking their religious beliefs.
Dear The Glades, please stop making Kiele Sanchez look less hot on the show...THANKS!
True Blood All sorts of stupid shit in this one. The witches are everywhere, Lafayette is possessed by Jesus' uncle and Marnie is possessed by that chick the vampires killed. Tommy becomes a skinwalker and does the only cool thing he will ever do: turn into Sam, fire Sookie, and have sex with Luna. Tara and her girlfriend check out the town, then get attacked by Pam. I hope Pam kills them both. Terry and Arlene's house burns down, their kid can see some black chick. Whatever, I wish they would die. The werewolves are joining a new pack, yay! Lame. At least Eric was entertaining. He bowed down to a super-dickish Bill and then Bill lies to whatshername and says that he needs the true death. Then frees him to go have sex with Sookie. The best part of the episode was Jason thinking he was going to turn into a werepanther. I loved when he and Jessica had their bonding moment. I cannot wait until they bang and Hoyt becomes angry.
Breaking Bad I do not want to say this was a bad episode because it was not bad, it was just slow. I am hoping that Hank snaps out of being an uber-deusche and becomes completely immersed with working on the case (instead of focusing on minerals). An entire episode about the buying of a car-wash was not the way to follow up last week's beat down of Walt. I actually felt bad for the car-wash guy. Just listen to Saul and buy a nail salon. I also enjoyed Jesse's cool party. That seems like my kind of crowd. And by my kind of crowd, I mean, that shit would freak me the fuck out if I walked into that party.
The link was made recently when I was told of the connection between Cool Runnings and Madonna. Having blogged about Hans Zimmer and Cool Runnings in recent weeks, it jogged my memory of this revelation that I learned about.
As a fan of the big screen, but an even bigger fan of music, I could not believe that I had never made the link between Madonna's (in) famous 'Like a Prayer' music video and the cast of Cool Runnings.
Leon Robinson Because yes, the actor who played the controversial 'Black Jesus' in Madonna's hit video in 1989 was the same man who played the fictional lead character Derice Bannock in the hit 1993 film Cool Runnings, based loosely on the unlikely bid by Jamaica to run a bobsled team at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary.
But it must be said that whilst Leon Robinson was seen by many to have been portraying a 'Black Jesus' in the Madonna video, he was apparently (or so Wikipedia tells me at least) in fact portraying the role of a saint that was supposedly inspired by Saint Martin de Porres, the patron saint of mixed-race people and all those seeking interracial harmony.
As well as not playing Jesus, Leon Robinson it must be said, was not Jamaican! He was in fact born in New York.
So in this case at least, Jesus was not Jamaican.
But I had to share the link because as a particular fan of this hit Madonna song and video and also of Cool Runnings, it bemuses me how I could've gone the best part of 15 or so years and never made the clear link between the two.

Alright everyone, you can stop worrying. I'm back in the U.S., we can all breath sighs of relief, the world is back to normal. You'll have to excuse the lack of updating over the last three weeks, but as I mentioned before leaving, I was busy running around Europe for a while. Over an 18 day stretch that ended with an interesting 24-hour period in which I dragged a 25-pound bag of chocolate through four countries, I saw five countries, 11 cities, some 25 museums, 20 Cathedrals and spent more money in ATM fees than I'd really like to admit.
Naturally, as you can imagine, this trip left me somewhat out of the loop as far as the sports world is concerned though I kept as regular tabs as I could on the major things, namely the Women's World Cup, the NFL lockout resolution (which, if you pay attention to logic, should have been no surprise whatsoever), the Mets and the Carlos Beltran trade. At least those were the events important to me. So in between my attempts to figure out how screwed I would be on the exchange rate if the U.S. debt talks continued to go south, whatever twitter could tell me is whatever I got.
But what I want to talk to you about is a particularly interesting phenomenon that I experienced on Sunday night, July 17, and that was the experience of watching the United States in a national sporting event among fellow citizens in a foreign country. You with me? I speak of course about the positively brutal experience that was watching the U.S. Women come up short in the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup. For a while I had started to believe the Women's World Cup might be a defining aspect of the trip in general. Sitting in the Airport in Boston I saw the U.S. take an early 1-0 lead in its quarterfinal against Brazil and then boarded a plane. Then I landed in Philadelphia, walked off the plane and right up to a sports bar as this thing happened.
Not that I want to tell any sort of tales out of school, and I don't want to give the impression that I'm a soccer expert by any means, but that just may have been the most dramatic moment in a American soccer that I've seen -- and maybe ever -- which is a tough slot to take given Landon Donovan's amazing goal a year ago and the U.S.'s dramatic penalty kick-victory over China in the 1999 Women's World Cup Final. With the eventual win in penalty kicks against Brazil to move on I was in an upbeat mood on my way to Europe (though a disastrous plane experience would change that) and I knew there was a chance I'd have to watch the U.S. potentially win the World Cup while on Germany soil.
I was in Berlin the night of the Final, not in Frankfurt where the game was being played -- and I would have bought tickets if I were -- but I and my cadre of American cohorts numbering a total of four found an American bar in the ground floor of a Belushi's hostel in northeast Berlin off the Rosa-Luxemburg Platz U-Bahn stop to watch the game in hopes we would be among friends, or at least countrymen. For the most part, this went off without a hitch as we were indeed among Americans, many sitting in chairs in front of a big projection screen, and we managed to snag a booth with our own TV. To boot, the beer and food were stunningly cheap for Europe, though hamburgers in Germany have a bizarre, overseasoned meatloaf-like quality to them.
What we saw was, for the most part, a dominant display of chances, goal posts and an awful lot of bad luck for the U.S., but we thought we had finally reached our deliverance when Alex Morgan finally slotted the Americans ahead in the second half. This, understandably, brought up many cheers in the bar, and some camaraderie among the patrons, but what was interesting was that when Japan would equalize, there were more cheers coming from around the bar. Were they Japanese this might have been understandable, but it was actually a group of Brazilians who had gathered to watch Brazil's men's team face off with Paraguay in Copa America. After Wambach's extra time header put the U.S. ahead again there was more cheering, which was responded to by even more cheering from the Brazilians after Japan's dramatic equalizer four minutes from time.
Whether the Brazilians were doing this out of vengeance for the quarterfinal loss or pure schadenfreude I couldn't say, but when Japan stunned the world by taking the championship in penalty kicks, thanks in no small part due to the U.S.'s shocking difficulties from the penalty spot, there was uproar from one side of the bar, and it wasn't ours. It is a sobering feeling. One that is particularly unique when you're in a highly charged group of several nations in a foreign country. With alcohol. I had been looking forward to the moment of watching that game all week in hopes that we would drunkenly be singing the Star Spangled Banner through the streets of Mitte, but it wasn't meant to be. And being in a place that wasn't decidedly friendly to your jingoist sporting aims was an unusual experience.
We got a measure of some revenge when Brazil dropped its own penalty kick showdown to a lesser foe, and considering they didn't even cash in on one spot kick, one American patron casually pointed out that the American Women's team must be better than Brazil's men's team. We cheered obnoxiously to each foul-up, attempting to deliver the same cruelty, rewarding hubris, but for me the same zeal was not there. I don't generally take the same joy in the pain of others -- unless they play in Philadelphia I suppose -- but even then it's not out of joy so much as relief that I won't have to hear about the conquests of a foe.
It was a new sporting experience for me, and while it will stick out prominently, it won't define the trip -- there were dozens of other great, positive experiences. But that might have made the trip just a little bit better.
As for the Mets, some of you may have noticed the last blog post I wrote where I described how the Mets always seem to do well when I'm in Europe. Prior to my trip they were 16-2 all time when I was on the mainland continent. They did not repeat the success this time around, or at least not to the same lengths. The Amazins were 7-6 while I was on European soil, which is not terribly impressive, but still a winning record nonetheless. The far bigger news was the Mets playing for the future (though as of today they've won five straight and are only 6.5 back of the Wild Card) by sending Carlos Beltran to the San Francisco Giants.
Supposedly, Zack Wheeler, the prospect received in the deal, has the potential to be a solid Major League starter, but watching Beltran go is an odd feeling for some of us. His legacy will inextricably be linked with Game 7 of the 2006 NLCS, a game that featured the greatest defensive play in franchise history, but also Beltran striking out looking on an impossible curveball to end the game. To much of the fanbase this has made him look like a whimpy disappointed who couldn't deliver on his seven-year $119 million contract. But lost in that is that during his tenure as a Met he made four All-Star Games (including both his first and last season with the team), won three Gold Gloves, two Silver Sluggers and finished fourth in MVP voting the same year he struck out to end New York's World Series dream. As a Met he hit .280, had a .369 OBP and an .835 OPS.
In short, he was the most underappreciated player in the franchise's history, almost entirely because of one strikeout, which, ironically, happened in his finest year with the team. One day, Mets fans will realize how lucky they had it.
Now that you've all stopped reading, I will leave you with one final note. I like Aussie Rules Football, and in particular, I like a team called Geelong FC, or the Geelong Cats. They are pretty good, having won two of the last four AFL Grand Finals, most recently in 2009 when they beat St. Kilda, 80-68. Last night, or early this morning, more accurately, they played Melbourne, a team not quite as good as them. Geelong won, but that wasn't surprising. What might have been surprising is that they outscored Melbourne by 114 points.
Yeah, you read that right. Most of you, I know, have no real grasp of just how many points that is since you don't watch much Aussie Rules Football, but let's try to hammer out a rough equivalent to the final score which was 233-47. Granted, this was the second-highest halftime margin and fifth-highest total score in the League's history, but that doesn't quite do justice to the dominance. AFL is somewhat more prone to high wild scores than American sports but not quite on this level. So for Geelong to beat Melbourne 233-47, were this American football let's take a guess at what it would be like. My guess is that you'd be looking at something like the Giants beating, oh, let's say the Browns, by a rip-roaring score of 140-10. Or perhaps it would be like the Marlins falling to the Mets 35-1. It's that kind of dominance.
I doubt we'll ever see anything quite like it in American sports, but perhaps we can hope. In the interim, now that I'm back in the States, I'll be watching for it. At least until the next Women's World Cup when I might leave the country again. Fortunately, that one is only in Canada.

Wondering where Tadd buys his shirts? Well, I have no idea. Lol. You can try asking him through his Facebook and Twitter accounts I guess since he regularly updates them. :D
Update: Finally, Tadd answered where his shirts are from:
"Also, I've seen a lot of people asking where I get my Filipino shirts, and the answer is from my Family in San Francisco! They mail em to me and get em at some store in San Fran. I will definitely find out the name of the store and let you know! And I'm pretty sure you can find a lot more online! Yay! WALANG TAKOT!!" Tadd posted on Facebook.
By the way, Tadd and another Filipino SYTYCD finalist Marko Germar made it to the Top 6. Whew! Two more weeks and the grand winner will be proclaimed. Is it to going to be one of them? I hope but the girls are really competitive as well. Do you watch the show? :D
I was watching The Matrix Revolutions last night and realized that it was not as terrible as most people make it out to be. Also, I hope the next Superman movie has a great fight scene. Hopefully they use a villain who has similar powers to Superman, so they can get pretty crazy with the flying & fighting. Time will tell...

I just watched the new season of Ancient Aliens, which was about aliens and the old west and was brought to you by Cowboys and Aliens. There were plenty of clips from the movie, which if you did not know has a pretty entertaining history behind it.
Pretty much everything in the episode was stuff that had been discussed before on UFO Hunters. Especially the Aurora, Texas incident. Everything I have read about the incident seems to point to the idea that the whole thing was a hoax by the journalist living in the town.
They pointed to the ground-penetrating radar that seemed to show a missing grave, where the alien is supposedly buried. I am sure old graveyards around the country have graves that are missing markers. If people really believed it was an alien, how come no one has broken the law and went out at midnight to dig the damn thing up? The town should want to dig it up to prove their case. Instead they are content receiving the camera crews every few years and probably a couple of amateur alien hunters.
Then they go to the Utah petroglyphs and how they show that aliens landed there and the local people were Star People or something. Again, this was something I have heard before from these kind of shows. Here is the big one they like to show:
Clearly, those are helmets and that thing in the background is a garbage can. I am not an expert in Native American glyphs, so I have no clue what they mean. I can see where people would take what they have seen from movies and apply it to these pictures as well. This could just be some artists attempt to draw the gods. Or it could be some shitty artist hot girls.
Then they point to this picture and explain how it must be an alien spacecraft. It is quite clear if you examine it.
Wanna know what it looks like to me? The ghosts from Pac-Man. Remember that game? Well some of you probably do, but those of you under the age of 25 may be ignorant to Atari games.
There was also some weird stuff about Elizabeth Lake in California and how there was a monster in the lake that used to eat people. Also, cowboys used to chase down a metallic bird and could not kill it.
Pretty much every lake has some story about monsters (okay not all of them, but it seems like it) and maybe these cowboys just kept missing whatever they were shooting at, or maybe they were just completely full of crap. I am going with that option, seems more viable.
They also discussed the Serpent Mound and how it was built by aliens (or for the aliens) so they could find their way back. I had this argument with someone on twitter: if the aliens could travel billions of light-years across the universe, why would they need some kind of mound to give them directions? His answer: landmarks work best. Yeah, when I drove to North Carolina, it was easier to look for a big oak tree than a mile marker or say, use my GPS. Ridiculous. They can navigate the stars, yet once on a planet, they cannot find the places they have been before? Idiotic.
Also, there was something about this slabs of dolomite that could conduct electricity and the gods must have used these to power their ships or maybe give the ancient people lights. Or maybe their fuel source was lightning and this guides the lightning...I had no clue what they were rambling about. Reminded me of an issue of something you would read in the Flash.
Most of this stuff seems pretty crazy, but then you add in Joseph Smith. The founder of the Mormon Church. If you want your theory of ancient aliens to be taken seriously, I say keep referencing Joseph Smith. People obviously think the Mormons are sane...

Not liking the new Facebook chat set-up? Do you prefer the old version instead?
Well, I recently followed a tutorial on how to restore the old version of Facebook chat and it worked. And believe it or not, it's pretty much fast and simple. It literally took me seconds to do the whole process (using Chrome). All you need to do is to install a small add-on and/or script depending on your browser (i.e. Firefox, Chrome, Safari, etc.). Restart your browser and presto! - Facebook chat old version restored! Check out my Facebook homepage now:
How to restore Facebook chat old version?
Here are the steps:
For Google Chrome (This is said to be the recommended method. If you don't have Chrome yet, you can download it here: http://www.google.com/chrome)
Mike Dogwill: "worked perfectly, awesome! thankyou"
Melissa Burks: "yes it works but doesnt let you have your groups back!!!! so not the old chat!!! "
Nishaa Keshwara: "IT WORKS! I love da old chat!!! ♥ xxx :)"
Luke Schofield: "i'm on firefox... it took me a while, but i got there. thanks :D"
Mathew Navin: "Im on Firefox and it works :D Thanks x"
I don't have a Facebook group, so I don't really know about what Melissa said. Hmmmmm... I guess don't bother executing this trick if you belong to some groups. And I will still have to try it on Firefox still on another computer. :D
The whirlwind that hit Cagayan de Oro on Friday afternoon has left six (6) houses to be destroyed and (3) people hurt, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said.
According to NRRMC, the whirlwind occurred at Zone 9 and 10, Bulua, Cagayan de Oro at around 3:10 p.m. on July 29, 2011.
"There was sudden occurrence of funnel-shaped strong winds from the sky down to the ground in powerful twisting motion that rapidly devastated houses along its path," NDRRMC described the incident.
Twenty-two (22) families were reportedly affected by the Cagayan de Oro whirlwind incident. Those hurt were immediately brought to the Cagayan de Oro City Hospital for treatment.
A day after Incubus' act, another American rock band staged their one-night concert in Manila. It was 30 Second to Mars who electrified their Noypi fans at Trinoma on a rainy Friday night (July 29, 2011).

But unlike Incubus who already came here thrice, it was the first time for 30 Seconds to Mars to be in the Philippines. During a presscon before the concert, lead vocalist Jared Leto said his band has in-stored "unforgettable" performances for their fans.
"We always try offer a night that is unforgettable and a night that gives people an opportunity to leave all their trouble, stresses, and problems for a while and just to be in the moment that their life to be FREE!. I’m not happy to see people wake up in the next day and slightly embarrass about themselves, just like in a bad wedding," Leto said.

The last year has flown. God has been good. I am grateful to Him. The words to this, one of my favorite hymns, have taken on significant meaning for me over the course of the last year.
How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord, Is laid for your faith in His excellent Word! What more can He say than to you He hath said, You, who unto Jesus for refuge have fled?
In every condition, in sickness, in health; In poverty’s vale, or abounding in wealth; At home and abroad, on the land, on the sea, As thy days may demand, shall thy strength ever be.
Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed, For I am thy God and will still give thee aid; I’ll strengthen and help thee, and cause thee to stand Upheld by My righteous, omnipotent hand.
When through the deep waters I call thee to go, The rivers of woe shall not thee overflow; For I will be with thee, thy troubles to bless, And sanctify to thee thy deepest distress.
When through fiery trials thy pathways shall lie, My grace, all sufficient, shall be thy supply; The flame shall not hurt thee; I only design Thy dross to consume, and thy gold to refine.
Even down to old age all My people shall prove My sovereign, eternal, unchangeable love; And when hoary hairs shall their temples adorn, Like lambs they shall still in My bosom be borne.
The soul that on Jesus has leaned for repose, I will not, I will not desert to its foes; That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake, I’ll never, no never, no never forsake.
Over the course of the last couple of weeks I've had several friends contact me for my thoughts about a new film - Divided - that blasts away at youth ministry as we know it. Since I've lived in the youth ministry world my entire life, they thought I should have some opinion. To be honest, I hadn't heard of the film but when time finally allowed, gave it a watch. . . just in the last hour in fact. What's most interesting to me is that as soon as I logged onto the film's site (you can watch it there), I realized that I not only knew the guys who had made the film, but I met them when they emailed me several requests to be interviewed for the film. . . and then they spent probably close to an hour interviewing me on film. And yes. . . I'm in the movie. . . for about 5 seconds!
Let me say that it does strike me as odd that filmmakers who asked to include me in a film they made never contacted me to let me know that the film had even been released, that I should give it a watch, and that they might want to hear my response. That serves to confirm my feeling about the film after one initial viewing - that this is an extremely biased film that was not made as a result of Philip Leclerc's stated desire to embark on a fact-finding journey, but rather that the film was conceived and made with a bias and agenda that existed long before the first clip was ever shot. To be honest, I had forgotten about my interview with film-making brothers Philip and Chris Leclerc back in 2010 at the Simply Youth Ministry Conference in Chicago. I remember feeling like they never really explained to me what they were trying to accomplish with their film, but I granted the interview anyway. Philip and Chris are genuinely nice guys, but I recall walking away from the interview sensing there was an agenda. . . I just wasn't sure what it was. Now I know.
Divided is a not so much a documentary as it is a promotional piece for the National Center for Family Integrated Churches. . . a reality that left me feeling snookered and manipulated as a viewer. Being conservative and reformed in my own theology, I have been vaguely aware of this organization and some of its more high-profile champions. As I understand it, NCFIC endeavors to promote what they understand to be a biblical approach (or the ONLY approach)to the spiritual formation of children, which includes the elimination of any and all age-segregated programming in the church, including Sunday School and youth ministry. These champions trace youth ministry's lineage to paganism, evolutionary theory, and men who were rebellious against God. Leclerc spends most of his interview time in the film with these high-profile, intelligent, and well-spoken champions.
I'm sure that I'll be watching Divided again soon, and thinking more deeply about it's method and message. I know it will be talked about quite a bit in the youth ministry world and so it should be. In the meantime, let me pass on some random thoughts and responses in no particular order. Know that these are somewhat incomplete, but here's my start in what will be an ongoing process, I'm sure. . . .
-Divided is a film that asks some very good questions and addresses some issues in youth ministry and the church that must be addressed. There are things we need to repent of in youth ministry. . . our lack of depth, our willingness to jump in and think we can supplant the Biblical design for the parental nurturing of children in the faith, that we've relied too much on programs and fun and games, etc. In fact, these criticisms that are leveled from "outside" the youth ministry world by NCFIC are many of the very same criticisms that loads of us have been working diligently, prayerfully, and biblically to address from within for decades. It troubles me that none of that was ever included with any depth or honesty.
-Viewers need to remember that what they are seeing and hearing in the film is mediated. Sadly, it's mediated in an imbalanced manner. I know that the Leclerc brothers shot hours and hours of video that has been boiled down to the one hour that remains. The comments that were chosen for inclusion serve the film's agenda well. I wonder how many of the comments from kids and youth workers at the film's start were taken out of context, chosen to prove a point, etc. I also wonder how many that could have been included that might cast a more positive light on youth ministry and what God is doing were left on the cutting room floor. Any of us could choose commentary from teenagers that casts our particular message in a good light, while casting those who think differently in a more negative light. That's what happened here.
-The problem of the stunted spiritual growth of the emerging generations is complex and multi-faceted. Yes, a lack of father-involvement is key. In fact, many in youth ministry are addressing that. And yes, youth ministry that's more about fun and games than taking kids from a diet of milk to one of meat is a real problem. But what about consumerism in our culture and our church? Has that played a role in people serving idols rather than the one true God? What about all the creature-comforts we enjoy that supplant an opportunity to suffer and thereby passionately seek and rely on God? What about poor preaching? Divided is too simple in it's analysis, diagnosis, and prescription.
-How about a film on the numbers of young people who grow up in homes who are doing what NCFIC prescribes who are not walking with the Lord?
-The interview with Ken Ham was especially troubling to me. I wonder if Ken Ham has ever gone to a youth group where the youth worker understands his/her role as a secondary spiritual support, where the Bible is taught, and where deep thinking is encouraged? And, when did holding to a "young earth" view become the litmus test for spiritual maturity?
-I'm afraid that Divided and its message is rooted in a dualistic view that splits God's world into separate sacred and secular realms. There is a thread of poor understanding of common grace and general revelation woven in and throughout the film's message and theology.
-Can youth ministry and father-involvement/nurture co-exist? I sure hope so! In fact, I've seen it happen.
-After viewing the film, I'm wondering what we do with Sunday School or any other efforts to age-segregate in order to teach in ways that are cognitively appropriate. Seriously. . . should we jettison separate and simultaneous efforts to teach the parents the deep truths of the Scriptures (meat) while nurturing five-year-olds in another room with the milk of a children's catechism? After all, shouldn't we as parents be going deeper, and deeper, and deeper so that we can effectively nurture our own children?
-On a positive note, I believe that the film asks good questions about age-segregation in worship. It just shouldn't happen. I've been trumpeting that for years and so have many others in the youth ministry community. But again, there are times when we can separate from each other to be nurtured in age-appropriate ways.
So, those are some very initial thoughts about Divided. I can't wait for the conversation to continue. Watch it then weigh in. Overall, I'm concerned that this film, its tone, and its message will wind up being more divisive than constructive. I hope the latter is the case.
One last thought. . . Did God ordain film? The Bible never says that we should use the worldly invention of film to communicate. The Apostle Paul says nothing about film. Seriously. Just saying. . . .
