'Cars 2' wins Philippine box office race on first week

The Pixar sequel "Cars 2" zooms its way to the top of the highest grossing films in the Philippines for Week 34 (August 24-28, 2011), according to Box Office Mojo.

"Cars 2" garnered total estimated ticket sales of 37.79 million pesos during its first 5 days, leading other Hollywood films "Final Destination 5" (Debut week, P25.5M), "Crazy, Stupid, Love." (2nd week, P5.3M), and "Conan the Barbarian" (2nd week, P4.6M).

Meanwhile, Star Cinema's "Way Back Home" which was on its second week scooped P4.3M more, with a total 2-week gross now of P27.8M.

This was also the week when GMA Films' "Tween Academy: Class of 2012" premiered. Unfortunately, it was not on the list. Did Box Office Mojo miss to include it? Because if it did not, we could assume that the film earned less than 64,327 pesos which is the lowest gross listed.

HAHAHAHAHAHA, Worst Idea Ever

Who got high and decided that Ghost Rider needed a sequel?  And why the hell is GR pissing fire at the end of the preview?

Fright Night

I do not know why I wanted to see this movie, but the preview intrigued me and I wanted to see it.  We went last night, and I have to admit that I was not disappointed.  It was not a great film, but it was enjoyable, which was all I was looking for last night.

The movie decided to do a few things that I liked.  First, it did not try to fake you out with the whole, is Jerry a vampire or not.  Nope, they jump right into it.  Second, they did not draw the suspense out and try to avoid the enemies face off early.  Instead, Jerry tries to come in, when Charley says no, he does the most rational thing ever:  he digs a hole in the ground and pulls out the natural gas-line and lights it on fire.  He then makes a comment about if there is not a house, he does not need an invitation.

That has always been something I have wanted to see some vampires do in Buffy or something.  Just burn down the house and be done with it.  Then kill everyone inside.  That is what I would do if I were a vampire.

The only thing I really hated was the whole high school clique thing.  I guess I just do not get it.  My school was not like that, I guess these things happen in other places, but it just seems so ridiculous to me.  Also, why the hell would anyone go into the house of a suspected vampire in the middle of the night, even if you just saw him leave.

The question I asked Lindsey after the movie, was whether or not she would take the offer that Charley's girlfriend made him when she became a vampire:  he could join them and be with her forever.  Personally, if a vampire offered me a chance at immortality, I would take it in a heartbeat.  Seriously, I would not even think about it.  What could be the downside?  No more sunlight?  Eh, night is more fun.  Have to kill people?  So, that is what homeless people are for.  I really cannot see a downside.

I was going to write something about True Blood today and how it could be better, but I guess I will save that for another time.

Way Back Home tops box office in its 1st week with P18M

"Way Back Home" raked a whooping 18 million pesos during its first week, topping the box office, Box Office Mojo reported.

According to Box Office Mojo, The Star Cinema movie knocked "The Smurfs" (#2) from the top spot and led other films which debuted the same week, "Conan the Barbarian"(#3) and "Crazy Stupid Love" (#4). "Rise of the Planets of Apes" and "Cowboys & Aliens" took the 5th and 6th spot respectively while Eugene Domingo-starrer "Ang Babae sa Septic Tank" which raised P2.15M more in its third week came in at #7 - "Ang Babae sa Septic Tank" now has a total estimated earnings of P30.26M.

Man of Steel

The new Superman movie comes out in 2013 and it seems there is a new image out from the film.  I like what I see so far, Henry Cavill looks like he could pull this off.  Unfortunately, I am one of the six people in the world that actually enjoyed Superman Returns and I thought Brandon Routh was pretty good.

The other big news out about the movie is that Laurence Fishburne will play Perry White, the EIC of the Daily Planet.  Apparently people get all pissy about this since in the comics Perry is a white guy.  This just does not bother me.  Fishburne is a good actor and he can play the role of a leader who can come down hard on his ace reporters.  I wonder if he will yell "great Caesar's ghost"?

Goodbye to Bubba 'Hightower' Smith

An an 80s child, the Police Academy series of films were a rite of passage and I lapped them all up (well, apart from the final installment).

The ludicrous characterisation of the main characters is what made the brand such a popular and long-lasting one.

It was therefore with no small degree of sadness that I heard a few days ago that one of its giants, both literally and metaphorically speaking, has died aged just 66.

Bubba Smith
It can be far too easily forgotten that Charles Aaron 'Bubba' Smith was in fact first and foremost, a famed professional sportman who won a Super Bowl with the Baltimore Colts in 1970.

But for those of my generation, it was his gentle giant Hollywood turn as Moses Hightower that will go down in the memory. Here is a brief compilation that has been put together by ITN to mark this sad occasion.

RIP Bubba 'Hightower' Smith

Angeline Quinto - You're My Home Lyrics

I close my eyes
And I can feel that you're a part of me
You are my home
Though I'm afar I'm in your company
I'm In You

I play my song
And I can hear you're in my melody
My life, my home
No matter what with you I'll always be

You're my home
And together we share this love for us
To be happy and free

You're my home
And together we'll strive to make this world
A better place to be

Come take my hand
Come fill my heart
with all the love you see

Let every child
Be what they are,
Be what they wanna be

You're my home
And together we share this love for us
To be happy and free

You're my home
And together we'll strive to make this world
A better place to be (noypistuff)

Jesus was Jamaican?!

Well, kind of...almost!

The link was made recently when I was told of the connection between Cool Runnings and Madonna. Having blogged about Hans Zimmer and Cool Runnings in recent weeks, it jogged my memory of this revelation that I learned about.

As a fan of the big screen, but an even bigger fan of music, I could not believe that I had never made the link between Madonna's (in) famous 'Like a Prayer' music video and the cast of Cool Runnings.

Leon Robinson
Because yes, the actor who played the controversial 'Black Jesus' in Madonna's hit video in 1989 was the same man who played the fictional lead character Derice Bannock in the hit 1993 film Cool Runnings, based loosely on the unlikely bid by Jamaica to run a bobsled team at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary.

But it must be said that whilst Leon Robinson was seen by many to have been portraying a 'Black Jesus' in the Madonna video, he was apparently (or so Wikipedia tells me at least) in fact portraying the role of a saint that was supposedly inspired by Saint Martin de Porres, the patron saint of mixed-race people and all those seeking interracial harmony.

As well as not playing Jesus, Leon Robinson it must be said, was not Jamaican! He was in fact born in New York.

So in this case at least, Jesus was not Jamaican.

But I had to share the link because as a particular fan of this hit Madonna song and video and also of Cool Runnings, it bemuses me how I could've gone the best part of 15 or so years and never made the clear link between the two.

So, there you have it!

'Happy Feet 2' teaser released!

Mumble (voiced by Elijah Wood), the dancing penguin, is back with new son Erik (Elizabeth Daily) in the upcoming "Happy Feet 2" which will be released in Real and Imax 3D.

"Happy Feet 2" poster

Directed by George Miller, the movie opens in theaters on November 17, 2011. Here's its plot:
Mumble the penguin has a problem: his son Erik, who is reluctant to dance, encounters The Mighty Sven, a penguin who can fly! Things get worse for Mumble when the world is shaken by powerful forces, causing him to brings together the penguin nations and their allies to set things right.

Matrix Video

I was watching The Matrix Revolutions last night and realized that it was not as terrible as most people make it out to be.  Also, I hope the next Superman movie has a great fight scene.  Hopefully they use a villain who has similar powers to Superman, so they can get pretty crazy with the flying & fighting.  Time will tell...
