Fall Television

What shows do I plan on watching this fall?  Well let us have a look.

Boardwalk Empire
Once True Blood ends, we actually get a good show on HBO on Sunday.  I am excited to see how Nucky responds with the world completely against him as opposed to the beginning of last season when everything was going his way.

House
I showed the preview last week and honestly, I hope this season is good.  I can pretty much tell you what will happen in the first episode:  House will make enemies in jail (also he will make plenty of jokes), then he will diagnose some prisoner (or guard)'s mysterious illness and save their life.  He will be out of jail in two episodes.

Supernatural
Last season ended with Castiel declaring himself as God.  I guess this season they will have to stop him from taking over the universe or something.  I wonder if it will end with the actual god returning and setting everything right...that would be lame.

Hung
I have no idea how I feel about this one.  I will watch it.  Who knows if it will be good though.

Sons of Anarchy
This is the show I am really looking forward to this season.  Where did we leave off?  Jax got his kid back, they faked out Agent Stahl and then murdered the bitch, and Jax accepts that Clay is the king and his father was foolish.  Judging by the previews, this will not last very long.

The Walking Dead
I am pretty sure it will still be good, even after all the off-season troubles.  As long as we see plenty of zombies and lots of death, I will be happy.

New Season of House

The new season of House premiers on October 3rd, and it looks pretty good.  Last season ended with House crashing into Cuddy's home.  It also looks like House will be headed for prison, pretty sweet.

Always Sunny Promo

Man of Steel

The new Superman movie comes out in 2013 and it seems there is a new image out from the film.  I like what I see so far, Henry Cavill looks like he could pull this off.  Unfortunately, I am one of the six people in the world that actually enjoyed Superman Returns and I thought Brandon Routh was pretty good.

The other big news out about the movie is that Laurence Fishburne will play Perry White, the EIC of the Daily Planet.  Apparently people get all pissy about this since in the comics Perry is a white guy.  This just does not bother me.  Fishburne is a good actor and he can play the role of a leader who can come down hard on his ace reporters.  I wonder if he will yell "great Caesar's ghost"?

Green Lantern Preview

Finally starting to get very excited for this movie.  I had doubts at first, but it looks pretty solid.

2011 Baseball Predictions

It was only a matter of time before I posted my predictions for the upcoming season.  A good chunk of these will be wrong, but who cares.  Go ahead and give me your best shot in the comments.

Most teams would kill to have Roy Oswalt and Cole Hamels as their one/two punch.  The Phillies have somehow managed to have them as as their third and fourth starters behind two guys named Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee.  Unfortunately, I see this division being pretty close.  The Braves will be nipping at their heels all season long.  Normally I would pick the Marlins to finish above the Mets, but I have a good feeling.  The Nationals will most likely suck and fans are going to love Jayson Werth down there.

IDP:  Mike Stanton hits more than 40 HRs this season.  I think he will move into that elite power-hitter realm this year.  In fact, I think he will be pretty awesome this year.

I just do not see the Reds getting worse from last year unless there are some major injuries.  If they put Chapman into the rotation, they are solid, if they leave him in the bullpen, they are solid.  The Cardinals are going to be hurting without Carpenter Wainwright.  The Pirates should not be as bad as last year.  At least that is what I half expect.  I also expect them to maybe lose 120 games.

IDP:  The Pirates will beat the following starters:  Greinke, Halladay, Lee, and Lincecum.  They will also be shut-out by the following starters:  Jordan Zimmerman, Homer Bailey, Dillon Gee, and Kyle Lohse.

Diamondbacks

Look what happens when a team with great pitching suddenly starts hitting.  The Giants were such a great story last year.  I look for Posey to continue to be good, but I guarantee that people will be disappointed with drafting him in the second round (I keep seeing him go there in mock drafts...)  The Padres are going to fall back to earth, just like they did the second half of the season.  Hell, they may even finish below the D-Backs.  The Rockies and Dodgers are a toss up, I just think if the Rockies are healthy and decide to play for a full season, they are a better team.

IDP:  Mat Latos will get hurt during the season.  Either that, or he will win 20 games.

NL Wildcard:  Braves
NLDS:  Phillies defeat Giants, Braves defeat Reds
NLCS:  Phillies defeat Braves
NL MVP:  Troy Tulowitzki.  I envision a big season from Troy.  .320 AVG/35 HR. 
NL CY Young:  Adam Wainwright.  I think he has another great season, but not the best of the NL.  He wins the award because of his previous great seasons, if you get my drift.  Apparently I am an idiot.  I take Ubaldo Jimenez.
NL ROY:  Aroldis Chapman.  I think he is still eligible.  If he is a starter, I think he wins 15 games and is actually in the Cy Young conversation.  My secondary pick is Freddie Freeman from Atlanta.
Pirates Record:  70-92.  Not the worst team in baseball...maybe.

I know everyone is putting the Red Sox in first place, but I do not think you just dismiss the Yankees.  The Rays are young and still talented.  The Blue Jays are not going to hit 257 HRs this season, but the should also have a better batting average.

IDP:  Posada gets hurt early on and they bring up Jesus Montero.  He crushes the ball and people forget all about Jorge.

White Sox
Tigers
Royals
Indians

Bold pick taking the Royals to finish above the Indians, but hey, I am a bold individual.  As usual this will be a tight division.  I just do not understand how so many people are so high on the White Sox.  I realize that Adam Dunn will make them better, but is it enough to win this division?  I doubt it.

IDP:  Grady Sizemore gets hurt yet again.  I know, pretty insane.  He then retires and considers doing softcore porn.

Angels
Mariners

Even without Cliff Lee, the Rangers are still the best team in this division.  The A's have great pitching, but no hitting.  The Mariners are still bad.  I do not think Dustin Ackley will save them.

IDP:  Jack Wilson gets traded to someone.  At least he hopes.

AL Wildcard:  White Sox  (I believe that the AL East teams will post winning records, but because of the number of times they play each other, none of them will have more than 90 wins).
ALDS:  Rangers defeat White Sox, Yankees defeat Twins
ALCS:  Yankees defeat Rangers
World Series:  Yankees defeat Phillies.  Fortunately after winning, Jeter/Posada/Rivera all retire as champions.  I can dream, right?
AL MVP:  Kevin Youkilis
AL Cy Young:  David Price
AL ROY:  Jesus Montero, but my secondary pick is Mike Moustakas from the Royals.
Royals Record:  71-91

X-Men First Class Preview

I was not excited about this movie at first (have I been excited for any comic book movies in awhile?), but then Matthew Vaughn was announced as the director (if you remember, I loved Kick-Ass, Stardust, and Layer Cake).

I am now very excited for this film.  I believe it will take the terribleness that was Wolverine away from my mind..

True Grit

Are you as excited about this movie as I am?  I had my doubts about The Dude playing the same role as The Duke, but after seeing that trailer...I am pretty damn pumped up.  It comes out on Christmas day, so hopefully I can see it sometime right after that.

Fall Television Shows

Can you believe that it is time for the TV shows to come back on?  That is actually kind of depressing.  Summer went by way too fast.  I have not done a preview of what I will be watching in awhile (2 years), but it seems like a good idea since so many good shows ended last year.  Okay actually just Lost and 24, but you get the point.

Sons of Anarchy
Oh god yes!  Thank you for coming back.  Do you realize how tough it was waiting for this season?  Granted, I finally watched season one during the summer, and it was absolutely awesome.  Anyways, Jax will have to go after Cameron, who kidnapped his son.  I am sure that Jax and Clay will put aside their issues for the time being (like they did in order to deal with Gemma's rape) and reign fire down upon Ireland.  Good. 

House
Last season ended with House and Cuddy finally hooking up.  How will this change our favorite doctor?  Honestly, it is a good thing that the show is funny because the plot is generally pretty weak.  Anyways, it always makes me laugh, and really, what else is there to watch on a Monday?

Supernatural
Sam and Dean defeated the devil and the rest of the dickbag angels.  Dean survived and decides to settle down with Lisa.  As the show ends we see that Sam has indeed survived and is happy to see Dean moving on.  I am sure they will be reunited somehow and they will go back to killing things.  As I say all the time, hopefully they will head down to Louisiana to take out some vampires, werewolves, werepanthers, fairies, and shifters...

You might be asking why I would punish myself by watching V again.  I honestly have no idea why I will watch it.  It might have something to do with the hot girls...and the shitty story.

So, what shows will you be watching? 

Fantasy Baseball Draft

Tonight was our fantasy baseball draft, and I think it went well for me.  Yes, I am going to subject you to a round by round analysis, I am sure this is exactly what you were hoping for.

My original strategy was to try and draft one of the major first basemen (Pujols/Howard/Fielder/Teixeira).  I was going to take Fielder with the fourth pick, but then I realized I could not pass up Ryan Braun.  The odd pick in the first round was definitely Ryan taking Joe Mauer with the sixth pick.  I can see why he would take him that early, even though he railed against him being the MVP last year...

Since Offord was not there for the first few rounds, he ended up with two third basemen in the first two rounds.  Nothing wrong with that, but I am hoping he will want to trade one of them for something...

By the third round, Votto was definitely the best option for first base, plus his high OBP makes him a little more valuable than he normally would be in other leagues.  It was a toss up between him and Reynolds, but I decided on Votto. 

Since we decided to use Ks and not K/9, I could not pass up Lincecum.  If we had went with K/9, I was going to draft starters in the later rounds and load up on middle relievers.  I would have punted wins, but my other stats would have benefited. 

I wanted Zobrist or Zimmerman, but they were gone by then.  I decided to take Jeter, and then I highlighted Aaron Hill to take him next.  Gideon snagged him and then took Morales as well.  I then decided to take Haren, might as well load up on starting pitchers.  The next round saw Jason take Adam Lind leaving me with Jason Bay.  I realize he may not match the production he put up in Boston now that he is with the Mets, but he will still be productive.

As you know, I have a love affair with Adam Dunn.  I had to have him.  Sorry, 40 HRs and a .400 OBP, how could I pass up on that?  I then decided to take Broxton, mainly because I usually do not take closers and that has not worked out well as of late.  I wanted Matt Wieters, but definitely not in the 9th round.  I would have taken him maybe in ten or eleven.

I am banking on Offord trading Wright for something that I have, so I decided to draft Gordon Beckham, who I think could have a really good year.  Stewart was just a second base pickup.   Bell and Broxton, yes I have solid relievers.

I decided to take Doumit as my catcher.  I probably drafted him a bit early, but whatever.  Happ was my next pick, I actually was shocked that no one took him.  I realize he is not a dominant pitcher, but he will probably win games.  Quentin, well I guess I am hoping he has a season like he did a few years ago.  Ryan had a nice pick of Beltran.  Amazing how far he has fallen, remember how he used to be a first rounder?

The last few rounds were uneventful, I took Garrett Jones with my next to last pick.  He may end up as a bust, or he may hit 30 homers, either way, nothing lost.

I need to move some players around, pick up a few middle relievers, get rid of a few of the hitters I took because I was not paying attention to which round we were in.  I think my team is very solid, but as always, it really depends on what happens.  I will be writing about the results each week, usually on Monday.  Good luck to everyone...

Kick-Ass Preview

I do not know if you guys realize how excited I am for the movie Kick-Ass.  Watch the preview, tell me you do not want to go see this with me when it comes out.  I have never read the comic and I am still pumped for this movie.

2010 Baseball Predictions

Normally I try to wait until sometime in March to post my predictions for the upcoming season, but I am way too excited for baseball to start.  Feel free to post your own predictions in the comments.

I always want to dismiss the Marlins.  Yet every year they do rather well in their division.  The Braves upgraded a good bit, this must be their final push to win for Bobby Cox.  The Mets, wow what can you really say about them?  I do believe they and the Marlins should be pretty close all season.  The Phillies are the clear favorite, with some competition from the Braves.  The Nationals, well they are there.

Insane Division Prediction:  Josh Johnson, the Marlins ace, will have some sort of arm trouble this year and miss multiple games or have a terrible season.

Brewers
Reds
Pirates
Astros

Obviously Pujols will just lead his team to victory.  He doesn't even need a team with him.  If he started pitching, he would probably throw 26 no-hitters in a season.  Anyways, if Carpenter and Wainwright pitch like they did last year, they run away with the division.  I cannot decide between the Cubs and Brewers.  The Brewers do not have the pitching, and Cubs will all get hurt.  On a bright note, the Pirates may not finish in last place, the Astros do not look very good.

IDP:    Homer Bailey pitches a no-hitter against the Pirates.  Still goes 9-11 on the season.

Every magazine, every internet article I read has the Rockies picked to win the division.  The thinking is that if Jim Tracey can get them to play like that all season...blah blah blah.  Remember when they went to the World Series, did they play like that the following year?  Exactly.  If the Dodgers stay healthy, they win this division.  The Giants have the pitching, they should just offer Bonds a one year contract.  Even without 'roids, and well into his 60s or however old he is, he can probably still hit more home runs than the current outfield.  D-backs and Padres, yep they play in the division too.  I do not think the D-backs will be quite as bad as last year, and the Padres will certainly prove that they suck.

IDP:  The Padres do not trade Adrian Gonzalez, and he does not hit more than 32 home runs this season.

NL Wildcard:  Rockies
NLDS:  Cardinals defeat Dodgers, Phillies defeat Rockies
NLCS:  Phillies over Cardinals
NL MVP:  Chase Utley...actually this will probably go to Pujols again, he is that good.  Utley could finish second though.
NL CY YOUNG:  Roy Halladay, I see him winning 20 games for the Phillies.  Lincecum finishes second and there will be a huge debate over who deserved it more.
NL ROY:  Alcides Escobar,  SS for the Brewers.  I believe he is still eligible as a rookie this season.  If not, then I need a secondary pick:  Jason Heyward, OF Braves.
Pirates Record:  72-90. A ten game improvement in one season would be HUGE.

This is always a tough decision.  Well except for the bottom two, they were pretty obvious.  This will be a cutthroat race for those top three spots and most likely the wildcard will also come out of this division.  I think the Red Sox are going to see that maybe resigning Jason Bay would have been a smart thing.  I do not believe Adrian Beltre and Mike Cameron are the answers.

IDP:  After failing to trade for Adrian Gonzalez, the Red Sox will trade for Garrett Jones.

At first I put the Twins up top, but then the more I thought about it, the more I really liked the Tigers.  They have some really good young pitchers, and still a very solid lineup.  Although if the White Sox sign Johnny Damon, it is all over...just kidding.  I want to root for the Royals this year.  I want them to improve and be the team that shocks the AL Central (much like how I predicted the Rays would do the same in the East...)  The Indians, they just suck.  It is actually kind of sad.

IDP:  Jeremy Bonderman pitches a few games for the Tigers, racks up a bunch of Ks, then gets traded away, and gets hurt immediately.

I have a tough time believing the Angels win their division again.  Unfortunately, I just cannot see who would dethrone them.  The Mariners have the possibly the best 1-2 starter combo in the AL, yet they also could be using Ian Snell as a #3 or 4 starter.  If you want something to make you laugh, check these teams final W-L Expectancies for 2009.  They played much better than they actually were.  Except for the A's.

IDP:  Ian Snell takes a no-hitter into the sixth inning, then promptly gives up seven runs.  Gets demoted to AAA, where he kills his catcher for telling him to throw more inside fastballs.  No lie, this will happen.

AL Wildcard:  Rays
ALDS:  Yankees over Angels, Rays over Tigers
ALCS:  Rays over Yankees
World Series:  Rays over Phillies.  A rematch of two years ago, I think that was the lowest rated (television-wise) World Series ever, if I remember correctly.
AL MVP:  Evan Longoria.
AL CY YOUNG:  Felix Hernandez.  Gideon will probably have an orgasm because of this.
AL ROY:  Austin Jackson, OF, Tigers.  Although, my secondary pick is Jesus Montero, C, Yankees, mainly because if Posada gets hurt, Montero will get his chance and apparently he can hit.
Royals Record:  75-87.  I figured I needed an American League team to balance out my Pirates prediction.
