Cry Me a River

If you are offended by vulgar language, this post will most likely offend you.

I have had a few bad days and I figured you would love to know about it.  Thursday I went down to Pittsburgh for the Pirates game.  Unfortunately, no one would go with me, which I was actually okay with.

I went to Rivers Casino first and played Three-Card Poker for about two hours.  At one point, I was up $150, but then I went on a losing streak and ended down $25.  I walked over to the game and had great seats (I used my coupon and got a free ticket).  The Buccos lost to the Dodgers and pretty much played like crap.  I then left and came home.

I changed into my Steeler jersey and went over to the YP to watch the final preseason game.  Needless to say, I had a bit too much to drink and Lindsey had to drive me home when she was done with work.  Yay for being responsible!

The next day when we got my car, I noticed that my mirror was knocked off and my Batman hoodie was missing.  Ugh, some asshole decided to steal my favorite hoodie!

Today I went to work a few hours early because we were getting the Washington & Jefferson College football team and I did all the work setting it up, so I wanted to be there to make sure it went smoothly.  It definitely went well.  Unfortunately, later things happened and I ended up staying and pulling a 14 hour day (15 if you count driving time).

Sadly, on the way to work, I got pulled over and the cop gave me a speeding ticket.  Great, a speeding ticket, at work for 14 hours, missed college football, favorite hoodie stolen, lost money at the casino, saw the Pirates lose...ugh.

Then as I was in the shower, it occurred to me to stop being such a fucking crybaby!  I mean seriously Josh, get real.  These are your problems?  Grow the fuck up.  There are people who have no jobs, no car, no spare cash to go to a casino or a baseball game.  There are people who work 15 hours a day for shitty pay.  There are people who wonder where they will sleep tonight or if they will have anything to eat.  You are whining about losing a hoodie?  Granted, it was a gift from my brother, but let us look at some of the facts:

-You left your doors unlocked in Ebensburg.  Of course someone is going to open the door and take your hoodie.  Way to go moron.

-You got a ticket because you were speeding, suffer the consequences dickwad.

-You worked that long because you wanted to help out and you know that at some point you can leave early.  Do not act like you were forced into it.  Hell, you could have left early since you came in early.

-You lost money at the casino because like a dumbass, you decided to up your bet because you thought you were on a hot streak.  You know better than this!  When you gamble like an idiot, you deserve to lose.

Instead of crying about what you do not have, be thankful for the things you do have:  a beautiful girlfriend, who loves you even when you are an idiot;  a great family; a job that you actually enjoy; a place to live; and you know, all that other stuff.

I Pooped the Earthquake

I am sure most of you heard about the earthquake in Virginia.  I wish I had a great story about how I felt it and knew exactly what was happening.  Sadly, I have no good story.  Instead, I have a great story.

I was in the bathroom at work, doing a humpty-dump (that is Lindsey's new term for pooping) and when I came out a few employees asked me if I felt the earthquake.  I informed them that it was not an earthquake, just me taking a massive dump.  Then I realized they were being serious, so I looked online and found out that there was in fact an earthquake.

Sadly, I did not feel a thing.  Although as Jason pointed out via twitter:  "If it was worse, at least you were in the right place to have the shit scared out of you. Weird that we were both in the bathroom."  Umm, we were not in the same bathroom for those of you who took that the wrong way.

I heard people on Cory Giger's radio show saying that they did not feel anything, yet other people near them did feel the quake.  How weird is that?  People at work felt it, yet me in the bathroom, felt nothing.  Well unless you count the giant turd that somehow came from my body.  Actually, it was not that big, I just figured that would gross everyone out.

Anyways, speaking of twitter (oh wait, I never spoke of it?  shut up and keep reading).  There were plenty of funny tweets (I hate this term) about the cause of the quake.  Here are two of my favorites (paraphrased because I am too lazy to try and find them):

-Alexander Ovechkin fell off the treadmill this afternoon causing a 5.9 earthquake.

-That was not an earthquake, it was just Prince Fielder's stomach rumbling for veggies.

And that is why twitter makes me laugh...

On a serious note, I was actually worried about my Aunt Lori and family because I texted her immediately (I saw a news report that said not to call because it could overload the cellphone towers or something).  She finally responded and said everyone was fine and that they were out camping and had stopped at a gas station when it hit.  I guess they were about an hour away.

Homeland Security SUV

As I was driving home from work, I noticed a white SUV flying up behind me.  I got a little nervous because I figured I was getting pulled over, until I realized I was only going 70 in a 65.  I moved into the right lane and let him pass me and I realized it was a Homeland Security police vehicle.

He turned towards where I was going and I figured he must be going to the Ebensburg Police barracks, but instead he turned into the Local Ice Cream place (LICP).  Curious, eh?  I came to two conclusions:

1)  He is a huge fan of their ice cream and wants to be the first person to get a cone today.  Seems reasonable, right?

2)  The LICP is some kind of terrorist front.  I am guessing they must have a cache of guns below the store and probably plan to overthrow the government.

I would bet money that I am wrong on both counts.

Quiz Time

Yeah, since I am on vacation, I am just going to regurgitate one of my old Yummy Pancake posts.  I think some of you will enjoy this if you never noticed it on the other site.

1. If you have six men and they each had six baskets. Each basket has six cats inside and each cat has six kittens. Assuming all are whole and healthy, how many legs are there?

2. I know what my job is,
The point has been made.
You say I have a big head,
And you're right, I'm afraid.
Put me in my place,
And then leave me alone.
Is someone to drive me home.

3. There is a town in Texas where 5% of all the people living there have unlisted phone numbers. If you selected 100 names at random from the town's phone directory, on average, how many of these people would have unlisted phone numbers?

4. How many three cent stamps are in a dozen?

5. If you divide thirty by a half and then add ten , what would your answer be?

6. A wealthy man named Richard Ellis had been counting his money. When he finished, he accidentally left a $100.00 bill on his desk. But when he returned for it a short while later, it was gone. Only two other persons could have seen the bill. One was the maid; the other was the butler.

The maid told him that she had hidden it for safekeeping under a green book that was on the desk. But when they looked the bill was not there.

The butler said he had found the bill where the maid had left it. He had placed it inside the book, where he thought there was less chance that somebody would find it. He had written down the page numbers so that he would not forget them. The bill was between pages 35 and 36, he said. But when they looked, there was no money in the book.

After Mr. Ellis had talked to the maid and the butler, he called the police. He was sure he knew who had taken the money. Who was it, and how did he know?

Good luck.

Funny Story About Fruit

When I was younger, I did not have much exposure to many exotic fruits.  My mom used to pretty much buy the standard:  bananas, apples, oranges, grapes, pears, peaches, plums, blueberries, strawberries, and watermelons.  I had honeydew and cantaloupe at different family functions, but that was pretty much the extent of my fruit trying.

I think at one point my mom bought us kiwis to try and I loved them.  It was not until I went to college in Erie that I finally tried pineapple.  I absolutely love pineapple now.  There is nothing better than grilled pineapple.  Okay, there might be a few things better, but not a whole lot.

When I was in Egypt, we stopped at a restaurant for lunch and I ordered a glass of fresh squeezed mango juice.  It was my first experience with mango.  It was probably the best drink I ever tasted.  It was pulpy and tasted like heaven.  No one informed that cutting mango is a bit of a pain, but still worth the time and effort.

After returning from the Middle East, I decided to give papaya a try.  That did not turn out so well.  Adam and I were at BiLo in Philipsburg and I decided to buy one.  I had no clue how to eat it, so I tried to just bite into it.  That was a terrible mistake.  I thought papaya was pretty much the nastiest thing ever.  Recently, Lindsey and I bought some papaya and I had to look up how to cut it.  This time, it was delicious.  I am now a fan.  Again, a bit of a pain to cut and whatnot.

I now want to try more fruits, unfortunately, I have never actually seen these two in a grocery store around here:  dragon fruit and star fruit.

Has anyone ever had either one?  Are they good?  What are some other fruits I should go out and try?

Ancient Aliens Season Three

I just watched the new season of Ancient Aliens, which was about aliens and the old west and was brought to you by Cowboys and Aliens.  There were plenty of clips from the movie, which if you did not know has a pretty entertaining history behind it.

Pretty much everything in the episode was stuff that had been discussed before on UFO Hunters.  Especially the Aurora, Texas incident.  Everything I have read about the incident seems to point to the idea that the whole thing was a hoax by the journalist living in the town.

They pointed to the ground-penetrating radar that seemed to show a missing grave, where the alien is supposedly buried.  I am sure old graveyards around the country have graves that are missing markers.  If people really believed it was an alien, how come no one has broken the law and went out at midnight to dig the damn thing up?  The town should want to dig it up to prove their case.  Instead they are content receiving the camera crews every few years and probably a couple of amateur alien hunters.

Then they go to the Utah petroglyphs and how they show that aliens landed there and the local people were Star People or something.  Again, this was something I have heard before from these kind of shows.  Here is the big one they like to show:

Clearly, those are helmets and that thing in the background is a garbage can.  I am not an expert in Native American glyphs, so I have no clue what they mean.  I can see where people would take what they have seen from movies and apply it to these pictures as well.  This could just be some artists attempt to draw the gods.  Or it could be some shitty artist hot girls.

Then they point to this picture and explain how it must be an alien spacecraft.  It is quite clear if you examine it.

Wanna know what it looks like to me?  The ghosts from Pac-Man.  Remember that game?  Well some of you probably do, but those of you under the age of 25 may be ignorant to Atari games.

There was also some weird stuff about Elizabeth Lake in California and how there was a monster in the lake that used to eat people.  Also, cowboys used to chase down a metallic bird and could not kill it.

Pretty much every lake has some story about monsters (okay not all of them, but it seems like it) and maybe these cowboys just kept missing whatever they were shooting at, or maybe they were just completely full of crap.  I am going with that option, seems more viable.

They also discussed the Serpent Mound and how it was built by aliens (or for the aliens) so they could find their way back.  I had this argument with someone on twitter:  if the aliens could travel billions of light-years across the universe, why would they need some kind of mound to give them directions?  His answer:  landmarks work best.  Yeah, when I drove to North Carolina, it was easier to look for a big oak tree than a mile marker or say, use my GPS.  Ridiculous.  They can navigate the stars, yet once on a planet, they cannot find the places they have been before?  Idiotic.

Also, there was something about this slabs of dolomite that could conduct electricity and the gods must have used these to power their ships or maybe give the ancient people lights.  Or maybe their fuel source was lightning and this guides the lightning...I had no clue what they were rambling about.  Reminded me of an issue of something you would read in the Flash.

Most of this stuff seems pretty crazy, but then you add in Joseph Smith.  The founder of the Mormon Church.  If you want your theory of ancient aliens to be taken seriously, I say keep referencing Joseph Smith.  People obviously think the Mormons are sane...

Treasure Hunting II

So recently, Lindsey has decided to start cleaning out all the boxes in our closet.  Most of the boxes are full of stuff from her youth, such as birthday cards, school projects, etc...Also though, there a few funny things.

My favorite part of this is the fact that she tries to sell her sister by saying she is mean and bad.  She must have realized that would not do the trick, so she adds that Kayla is also sweet.  Plus, she must have been pretty worried about the government getting their share since she noted the price was $500 + Tax.  Is there a tax on selling humans?  I am not sure.

Today is Nov. 27, 1994.  It is Sunday.  I am playing with my sisters birthday toy.  And it is the 7 dwarfs.  And my favorites dwarfs are Dopey Happy Sleepy Doc Bashful Snesy And Grumpy!
I tried to scan pages of her journal, but they would not show up since she wrote so light with pencil.  I always thought Snesy was the coolest dwarf.

Today is Sat. Feb4, 1995.  First me and Kayla were playing school in the morning.  We had fun!  Next we ate lunck I had awolful Kayla had a pan cake.  It was good.  Then we got a bath.  The water was hot.  Last we went to bed at mid night.
It took me awhile to figure out what Lindsey ate, at least until I read what Kayla ate.  Also, if you read enough of this journal, she and her sister played school way too much.  It seems like they came home from school and then immediately started playing school.  Also, she went to bed at midnight, you have no idea how funny that is to me.  She can never stay up until midnight nowadays.

8-18-96
We are at the beach it's the first night at the beach.  It's Sat. today.  I like the beach.  I like to jump the waves.  We are at Myrtle Beach.  We went to Dick's to eat.  I had fun.  Love, Lindsey.  P.S. See you tommaro.
I love that she signed this entry and said that she would see the journal tomorrow.  This is funny because she never wrote in it again.

Now, before people jump on me about making fun of her journal from when she was seven years old, allow me to say that I am not really making fun of her and she gave me permission to use this stuff.  I am excited to go to my mom's house and find some of my old writings from school and post them as well.

We also found this hoody from one of those boxes.  Unbeknownst to most of you, Lindsey was a pretty damn good long jumper in high school.  Which seems pretty improbably since she is like 5'2.  I always picture long jumpers as tall...

Go To Church People!

I might be inclined to go to church if there were Star Destroyers sitting above.  Or at least, I might go nearby and watch to see if they start firing on the parishioners...

Picture comes from Cory Doctorow.

A Little About the Future

Hey there!  This is Josh from the future.  Actually from the year 2130.  Seriously, no bullshit.  I know what you are thinking, how the hell can you be from the future?  Well scientists figured out time travel a few years back and they also figured out that you can go as far back as you want.  Do not ask too many questions, do I look like a scientist?

I realize your next question is probably "how are you still alive, you are 150 years old???"  Yeah, I am pretty old, but that is not too significant anymore.  Scientists figured out how to extend the lifespan of people, the average person now lives to about 200 years old.  Again, I am no scientist, so do not bother asking how this happened.

Now that we have all that kind of crap out of the way, you probably want to know what has been happening in the world.  Well that is what I am here to tell you.

Politics
Things turned to shit in this country in the 2030s.  The economy sucked, the rest of the world surpassed us, we had serious problems.  It did not help that people were living to over 120 on average, yet the retirement was still 70.  Yeah, no one could figure out what the hell was wrong in the world.

Then the people elected Juan Rodriguez, our first Latino president (hey, in this entire time, we have still not had a woman president, haha, suck it feminists--just kidding).  He had radical ideas, one of them was raising the retirement age to 120.  He also decided to legalize marijuana and then tax the shit out of it.  He then decided to force Mexico to be part of the United States, divided it up into eight states.  Pretty much made the place a giant resort.  The rest of the place was used to cultivate weed (which was basically all they did down there to begin with).

All those fears about drugs ruining the country turned out to be false, people pretty much only smoked dope on special occasions.  Especially when the laws for other drugs became insane.  Caught with a little cocaine?  50 years in prison.  Tested positive for heroin?  Penal colony in Mexico.  People began studying and focusing more on becoming intelligent.  This became our greatest export:  knowledge.  Medical, computer, technological, whatever advancement you can think of pretty much happened here.

Technology
Speaking of tech, you are undoubtedly wondering what the world is like in the future.  It took me about ten minutes to remember how to type.  We do everything with our minds now.  So much easier.  I do have some bad news though, still no flying cars.  No land-speeders, none of that cool shit.  Cars are cool now and they use an alternative fuel source.  I cannot mention what though, it would blow your mind, I will give you a hint:  you put it in your coffee.

Sports
I do not want to spoil anything, but the Pirates eventually win the World Series.  I am not even kidding.  I will not say what year, but when they do win it, cherish the hell out of it.  You will not see another one.  Depressing, I know.

The Steelers win a bunch of Super Bowls.  After Ben retires, they draft a QB who is 6'7, 280, runs a 4.1 40 and can throw the ball 90 yards (some people believe he may be the first genetically engineered athlete, we fans say stop being jealous).  The Pens also win a bunch of Stanley Cups, so you will always have those two to make you happy.

The Yankees sign the first player to a $1,000,000,000 contract.  He is a short-stop from Ireland and ends up breaking the HR record.  He hits over 900.  They win a shit ton of World Series with him, most consider it a good investment.

People in America still do not give a shit about soccer.

Random Stuff
-George R.R. Martin finally finishes A Song of Ice and Fire in 2056.  You were right, Jon is Rhaegar's son.  He and Daenarys rule the entire world.  Hope that does not ruin it for ya.

-Movie franchises start combining and become absolutely ridiculous, such as Fast and the Furious 21:  The Rise of the Raging Transformers.  Or Saw 87:  Jigsaw vs. James Bond

Oh and the most important thing is about your own future Josh:  You will end up
OH SHIT!  HERE COMES THE TIME-COP, I NEED TO RUN FOR IT!

The Return of Me

I realize I have been back for a few days now, but I was still on vacation mode and did not feel like posting anything.  I realize that today is Memorial Day and everyone is outside having cook outs and whatnot, but I am going to give you the highlights of the trip to North Carolina.

The Trip Down
We left Altoona on Saturday after I was done with work at 4:00, also we had to drop my car off to get inspected.  Our start time was sometime after 5:00.  We went for a few hours and then finally got so hungry that we had to stop outside of Winchester at the IHOP (I apologize Aunt Lori, I should have called, but it was pretty sudden when we decided to stop and eat).

Lindsey drove the entire way down because I was so tired.  I managed to stay awake though and be the navigator.  I want to point out that Virginia feels like it never ends.  We finally made it to the house at about 3:30 a.m.  We went straight to bed because we were exhausted.

Beach Days
I forgot that I am no longer 18 and that because of The Place That Shall Not Be Named, and since I no longer see the sun, I need more than SPF 30.  I laid around reading and then playing bocci.  Needless to say, by the end of the day, I was pretty damn burnt.

My chest, knees, and feet were unbelievably burnt.  In fact, I am pretty sure my feet turned purple.  The next few days I had to wear a t-shirt on the beach and keep my feet covered up.

We went and purchased some SPF 75 after that, it definitely seemed to help.

The rest of the days on the beach were spent mainly reading or taking long walks.  Lindsey and I walked two miles south one day and then three miles north the next.  The beach there is not like Myrtle Beach or Ocean City.  There is not a boardwalk, plus since the beach is relatively small, there are not tons of things to do.  It is a very beautiful place and it would probably be a great place for a family vacation, or for a beach wedding (hey, that was why we were there).

Beach Nights
We went out to eat a few times at this place called Rick's.  It was pretty nice (it was supposedly a Steelers bar, but they also had other team stuff inside, especially a Ravens jersey), the food was really good.  I had this delicious Monte Cristo  with crab-meat.  Also, at this other place, Lindsey ordered scallops wrapped in bacon, which were slightly fried.  So damn good...everything should be wrapped in bacon.

Gather around children, it is time for a funny story.  I know you like funny stories.  On Tuesday night, we went out to this place called Lo-Rei-Lei's for karaoke.  Thad (the groom) and I played pool with these guys.  And this other dude started talking to us and buying us shots of Petron (I swear that stuff will be the death of me someday).  We head back to the house and I head to bed, very drunk (I honestly do not remember coming home or the last few moments at the bar).

Apparently, I got up to piss and never came back to bed.  Lindsey looked for me, but I was nowhere to be found.  In the morning she hears people talking and goes up to find me on the pull out couch.  Unfortunately, another couple had been sleeping there.  I went up there and crawled in bed with them, but the funny thing is they did not know it.  The guy (Brett) put his arm around me and cuddled with me all night.  He woke up and kind of freaked out when he realized he was spooning a guy.  He yelled at me to get out of his bed and took the covers away, I guess I grabbed them back and rolled over to sleep.

Needless to say, I got made fun of pretty much the rest of the week for that one.  Oh well, I am pretty sure I have done that kind of thing before.  A couple of other nights, Lindsey and I went out on our own to have a few drinks.  And some of the others were spent at the house just relaxing.

The Wedding
Most of you know that I am not someone who thinks of weddings as beautiful or anything like that, but maybe it is me getting older (or maybe it has something to do with my beautiful girlfriend), but this wedding was very beautiful.  Also, I believe I have used the word beautiful in this post more times than all my other posts combined.

I half expected Lindsey to trip coming down the steps, but she did a fantastic job.

The Return
We spent some more time at the beach on Friday, but I was starting to blister and getting lightheaded, so I went up to the house and took a cool shower.  I then packed up and after awhile, Lindsey came up and she got ready and we made our way back to Pennsylvania.

Remember how I said Virginia felt like it lasted forever?  Well on the way back, I felt like we were never going to make it out of North Carolina.  The directions from Google Maps said we only had to go up this one road for 21 miles to hit the interstate, BULLSHIT!  We drove for about an hour, through some very undesirable areas (Mt. Olive is a scary town).  At one point, there were two guys out of their car about to fist fight.  So weird.

We left around 2:30 and made it home by about 1:30 (we stopped for dinner for about an hour).  As much fun as I had, I was ready to be home and in my own bed.  I woke up the next day and saw that my chest, shoulders, and arms were peeling like crazy.
Yesterday was the actual wedding reception up here in Pennsylvania and it was a great time.  We drank, we danced, we ate good food...

Below are some of the other pictures from the trip that I thought were cool:

I took this on the way down and it was of Lindsey with my phone on negative mode.  She looks like a zombie ready to eat me.  Very scary.

The first day there, I took this picture and did not realize the camera was still in negative mode.  Looked pretty cool though.

This is what the beach actually looked like.

This was Lindsey on the last day as we prepared to leave.  Doesn't she look hot?

Again, this is her before we leave.

This is the girls at the bar, pretty hot and pretty drunk.

We were pretty drunk at this point.

How funny is it that Brett had to escort Lindsey?  At the reception, during the bridle dance, I went up and danced with Brett, everyone had a great laugh.

Lindsey and the bride.

A bunch of pictures of us together.  We are such a hot couple.

This is a video of two of the guys in our group trying to sing Ice, Ice Baby.  They were pretty bad, but also funny since they just kept cracking up because the words went so fast.

Matt Adams and the Future of Philipsburg

When I was a kid, well not so much a young kid, but in my teens, there was a guy from my hometown who was in the minor leagues.  His name was Robert Paulson...just kidding, it was Brian Pelka.  Since his minor league time was before the internet, we rarely got any information on how he was doing.  The local paper would sometimes run a small blurb updating his stats for the year.  After a few years, he was seemingly forgotten.  For some reason, I always thought he made it to the AAA club for the Pirates, but after looking at his Baseball-Reference page, I found out that he never made it past A ball.  Odd.

Another kid got drafted from my high school, who was only a two years older than me.  I was able to follow his career a little more, the local papers followed him more closely (he was drafted in the 10th round by the Detroit Tigers).  Justin Hazelton never really did anything though (I do not mean that in bad way, I always wanted him to do well, he played on my little league team), and eventually tried to switch to a pitcher.  Interesting, Eric Milton (he was from Bellefonte) was drafted in the first round of that draft.

Over the years I have followed the various kids who have been drafted from my high-school and none of them have ever made it past the A level.  I have no clue if anyone from my school ever made it higher than that.

The last kid I saw drafted was Matt Adams.  I have no clue who he is, but apparently he was good at baseball and went to Slippery Rock.  The Cardinals took him in the 23rd round and I figured there would never be anything about him.

I was wrong, the bar in Philipsburg would post his stats in the bathroom (do not act so surprised, many bars hang the newspaper up in the bathroom) and I noticed that the kid could hit.  Since being drafted he has went from the low minors and is now up to AA.  Unfortunately, I kept checking the different minor league prospect rankings and his name never came up when discussing the Cardinals.

This season he is one of the top hitters in the Cardinals organization and a few of the Cardinals minor league blogs actually believe he could make it to the majors (albeit as maybe a DH).  I wish him the best of luck.  It would be cool to see a major league player from my area.  Hell, the closest we have is Joe Beimel and he is from St. Marys (or maybe Milton, but he is no longer in the league).

If you want to read some of the stuff about him from Cardinals writers, check out Future Redbirds, he has his own label, must mean that people are noticing...

Also, here is another article from Rumbunter (apparently the writer is from Philipsburg as well).  The picture is from that site.

Bin Laden Stuff

As everyone knows, last night President Obama announced that Osama Bin Laden was killed.  You can read all about it here.  It is a great moment of closure for American's, but does not necessarily mean that the radical Islamic groups will stop hating us over night.  When it was announced that the president would be making a major announcement at 10:30 p.m. last night, Twitter went a little crazy with speculation, some of which were very funny.

-Capitals are relieved of their duties.
-Obama assuming control of the Dodgers.
-Bin Laden's dead, does that fix the Pens power play?

Those are just a couple of the ones I can remember off the top of my head.  I also saw this picture from the Daily Collegian, which made me proud to be from Penn State.  I heard that the cops were at Beaver Avenue, but they said there was no rioting or anything out of control.

Here is a video of Phillies fans chanting U-S-A during the Mets game after the announcement was made.  I guess this makes up for booing Santa Claus...

Lindsey's New Car

The above is a picture of Lindsey's new car.  She wanted some kind of smaller SUV and had it narrowed down to the Ford Escape, Honda CRV, and Toyota RAV4.  After a few weeks she decided to buy the Escape.  At first she wanted a new one, but realized she could not afford a new one with all the features she wanted (the SYNC stuff, sunroof, etc...)  Then she found a 2009 with low miles with everything she wanted, including heated leather seats.

I started thinking about all the neat little features and wondered why these features are so expensive and how come they are not standard in all vehicles.  It seems silly to me that bluetooth technology is not in every vehicle at this point.  This is the future, I should be able to say "car, call Lindsey" and then I am talking to her.  Yes, I would always say "car" first.

When we looked at the RAV4, they said it was $2500 extra to put in the touchscreen panel.  You can buy the same thing from Best Buy for $900 to $1200.  Hell, when I bought my car, they said it was an extra $1500 if I wanted power windows/power locks.  I told the guy that I am quite capable of rolling down a window.

This is the 21st century people, we should demand that cool features be in our cars.  If someone from the 1950s got sucked into a time-warp and came to 2011, I want them to freak out when they get into a car.  I want my next car to sound like KITT and have already started itself before I come out.  I should be able to send a text to my car that turns it on and adjusts the temperature to just the way I like it.  I should be able to tell the car to find some sports-talk radio shows and give me a list to choose from...

Wait, What?

As I sit here reading up on my normal afternoon sites (mainly stuff about fantasy baseball), I have the television on and was vaguely paying attention to some program on History International.  The show was about the Anasazi people of the southwest.  Do not fear, this is not going to turn into a historical discussion.

When they started to discuss the people leaving the Chaco Canyon (or disappearing), I naturally assumed that History Channel would make this into some alien astronaut debate or something similar.  Instead they had actual historians and archaeologists discuss different theories that sounded like plausible ideas.  And yes, I just checked to make sure I was actually watching History International and not the Science Channel or something like that.  How weird....

To be fair, I have no clue if this says something about the crappy programming on History or if I just assume every show on the channel will be about aliens.  If this were an Ancient Aliens program though, they would take that picture of Chaco Canyon and try to show how it corresponds to some constellation.

Pay To Play

Yesterday on Cory Giger's show, he discussed the recent budget cuts in schools and how some schools will have to start charging kids a fee to play sports.  From what I heard, most of the callers seemed okay with this since many of the other extra-curricular activities already have to pay money (i.e. band, chorus...).  The only fear from many people was the slippery-slope.  When does $50 turn into $100 or even more?

I was very tempted to call and give two responses, unfortunately I was driving to Johnstown and lost the program.  My first response was going to be a semi-smartass comment.  Something along the lines of:  if parents cannot afford to pay the fee, just keep the kid out of sports and let them stay at home and play video games.  Get it?  Video games are expensive.

My second comment was an actual solution to this problem.  If kids/parents are going to have trouble paying this fee, why not make the kid get a part-time job?  Work one or two days a week, even if it is only for a few hours.  I realize this does not work for younger kids, but for the ones 15 and older it certainly does.

The Place That Shall Not Be Named is always hiring.  If a kid would come in and be up front about the limited schedule and the reason for working, we would try to find a job for them.  If you go up and down the boulevard in Altoona, you will see that almost every restaurant has a sign that says NOW HIRING.  And do not give me any bullshit about not being able to work because you are too busy.  We have employees who play multiple sports or participate in band and they find the time to work one or two days a week.

Just one solution to a minor problem.  I should run for mayor.

Here Comes the Sun

Look at these pictures of the Sun, taken by Alan Friedman.  These are not some kind digital representation or CGI, it is the actual sun.  If you want to know more about the process read this article.

So cool...

Blizzards

Apparently winter is not going down without a fight.  After a few nice days and seeing most of the snow melt away (except up here on Mount Doom...it is funny that I call where I live Mount Doom, since in LOTR that mountain was a volcano...)  Today it started snowing and it did not stop.  We probably have at least six inches up here so far (in thirty minutes, my car was completely covered after getting home) and down in Altoona there was a good 2-4 inches.

It reminded me of the blizzard of '93.  Gather 'round kids, time to hear Grandpa Josh tell ya all about the horrors of that blizzard.

My dad, pap, brother, and I went to the regional wrestling tournament over at Altoona.  During the day the blizzard struck and the tournament decided to just get the entire thing over with in one straight shot, no breaks.  As soon as it was over we left for Philipsburg.

The police were out on the highway getting ready to close the interstate.  We were the last vehicle they let go.  My dad had a four-wheel drive truck and we started out at a pretty steady pace.  Pretty soon though, it was a solid white-out.  We probably traveled between five and fifteen miles per hour.  My dad stopped a couple times to pull smaller cars out of ditches.

It was not that the road was just bad, you just could not see anything, so knowing if you were actually on the road was quite a problem.  It took us nearly four hours to get home (it normally takes about 40-45 minutes).  Once home, because of the hill we lived on, my dad could not get the truck up the driveway.  We had to walk up the very steep hill to the house.  There was one small problem, the wind caused the snow to drift, which caused the bottom of the hill to have a snow over four feet high.  My dad had to carry my brother on his back up the hill.

Back then I thought it was so ridiculous that we came home.  Many of our family members had hotel rooms, but my dad and pap did not want to stay.  Now though, I think of it as an adventure and one that I am glad to have been involved.

As I drove home tonight I kept thinking about that drive home and how my dad had to concentrate and use every bit of his driving skill to make it home.  I remembered how many times he would have to stop to clear off his windshield wipers (the snow was coming down at such a rate that even if they were moving, they could not clear it away fast enough...crazy).

Is there a point to this?  Nah, just reminiscing about the past.

Monday Morning Stuff

It is Monday morning and I am awake.  I worked third shift on Saturday and accidentally slept until 4:00 p.m. on Sunday.  I ended up falling back asleep at 10:30 p.m. and waking up at 3:00 a.m. and I have been up ever since.  This means you get some kind of rambling mess today.

Football
The Steelers beat the Ravens in a game that gave me a nervous breakdown.  To be down 21-7 to the Ravens going into halftime is not a good thing.  Then the team came out in the second half and just dominated.  The defense was absolutely amazing.

I noticed that immediately after the Jets beat the Patriots, a lot of my friends started posting comments on facebook saying that the Steelers were going to the Super Bowl.  We still have a very tough game coming up next Sunday.

It has been nice to hear the nation media folks actually saying good things about Ben.  I heard a couple different radio shows where they said he was up there with Manning and Brady as the best in the league and that he is better than those two at certain aspects.

Game of Thrones
There was a new preview for upcoming series on HBO.  Check it out.

Hockey
I missed the Pens game because I was asleep, but they beat Boston.  I am getting so pumped for the Feb. 4th game versus Buffalo.  Lindsey, Adam, Lora, and I are going to have a great time.  Speaking of hockey, I hate this commercial.  Is it because I want to take a shovel to Ovechkin's face?

Links
James has a new blog.  He is a much better writer than me, yet he never posts.  Maybe he will try and change that...

The Pirates made a huge move over the weekend

The world will be ending soon, call the crazy people up and let them know.

Alright, that is about all I have for today.  I need to shower and run some errands.  Seriously, I have errands.  I am getting old.

1000th Post

This is the 1000th post I have written.  I guess this is something of a big deal, I mean, I have kept up with it since 2006, which I never thought was possible.  It seems like just yesterday that everyone was laughing at my 100th post.  Do not fear, there will be no scary pictures of me this time.

It is funny that as I look at Google Analytics, I see that the top searches that lead to my site have been:  funny facebook notes, Josh Croyle, 2010 baseball predictions, and Kiele Sanchez.  In fact, my most popular post continues to be about Lost Episode 314.

I am shocked that no one from Sierra Leone ever stumbles upon my site.  That is where the name comes from, well from the Mende people of Sierra Leone.  I do get visitors from Albania and Jordan, who were both in my Nations of the World, I might have to write another one about visiting Egypt.

Looking back, we have had some fun times with the debates between Ryan and I.  It seems like we can never agree on anything and if someone read this that did not know us, they would assume we hated each other.  On the other side though, my Crazy Cults post helped cement my relationship with my mom's side of the family.  They have not spoken to me since then (this is a good thing, they are psychotic.)

I could probably go on and on about all the great posts, all the really stupid ones, and blah blah blah, but the real question is where will we go from here?  Who the hell knows is the real answer.  Things will continue as they have, I will post whatever I feel like.  Hopefully you will continue to enjoy over the next thousand posts.

New Year Resolutions

It is that time of year when everyone decides to make some kind of resolution.  Not me, I think they are stupid.  I joked with a lot of people this year that I was going to make a resolution not to kill anyone, since that had been my resolution for the past 29 years and I had a pretty good streak going.  People think I am a dick for mocking their method of changing their lives.  I also said that I was going to be less of a dick, but that lasted until about 12:06 a.m.  Oops.

This got me thinking about resolutions and the whole point of them.  The majority of you will make one to lose weight this year.  I remember when I was at PSU, this time of the year people would flock to the White Building to lose those extra pounds.  The first week of school there would be a line out the door at almost all times during the day.  Then, two weeks later, they would all be gone.

If you decide that losing weight is your resolution, do not be stupid.  Set an achievable goal.  Saying you want to lose thirty pounds sounds like a good idea, but can you actually do it?  If you want to lose the weight, start with something like "I want to lose two pounds a month."  Keep track of it...sorry, I am going off on a tangent here.

People should not need to make a resolution to be a better person.  If you think making a promise to yourself after a few shots and some champagne, then maybe you should wish to be less of a retard while you are at it.  Damn, I guess that not being a dick resolution is officially over.
